Hi everyone. As you probably know, I'm doing research and asking a LOT of questions. I also inquired about hand fired wood/coal hot air furnaces to a dealer. I don't have concrete basement walls, but the dealer said that, based on their model, I can power vent without a chimney. Does anyone here have this kind of setup? Because if it does work, I can get bulk coal (cheap)and wood (free) and I'll enjoy a toasty warm home without or use LESS propane. :D

I do understand that it requires more attention, but I think the benefits out way the extra work.

Power vents are NOT recommended for Hand fired stoves, do a search on the topic....been discussed many times.
Can You Power Vent a Gravity Fed Stove?

They can burn a long time and get really hot without any outside source and if you loose power, you will build up fumes if the power vent goes out or fails. :(
Unlike stokers, they pretty much shut down without any power.
If thinking about wood/coal, just put in a double wall chimney, then you will be all set.

Power venting a hand fired is a no-no...
No power and house fills with CO then you die...
The problem is with the large amount of fuel in the fire bed...
Put up a metal chimney or better yet a masonry or pumice chimney...

Sorry, no direct or power vent for hand-fired appliances, for the reasons stated. The only way to do it would have a automatic back-up power source for the vent motor, but even then I wouldn't do it. The risk of a failure is too great, CO poisoning is too real, it's not worth risking your life to save the cost of a chimney.

Hi WNY, the reason I'm asking is because the dealer said that I can for THEIR model. I too was confused because I KNEW power vent are no good for hand fired. So, why was I told that I could? :?:

Some dealers may be misinformed...
What is the specific make and model...
Then go directly to the MFG and check with them...
If the MFG specifically says it can there are usually some factors that go along with it...
Just because a dealer says it can be done does not make it so...

They probably see in the details of power vents that you can put a power vent on ANY Coal stove, not realizing there are Stokers and Hand fed. they probably don't have a clue or just want to make a quick buck on the sale of a power vent.

Call The Manufacturer they will explain how it works with a power vent you can not run the combustion fan with a power vent they have somekind of adaptor plate vent that goes on and replaces the combustion fan . To run a power vent with the unit . Don't shoot the dealer for passing on the info that the Manufacturer told him .Even know with any other hand
fed type stove or furnace it goes against all logic. Call & Talk direct to the manufacturer engineer .
