EFM
KeyStoker
LL
Pretty much open to any Mfg.

LL doesn't make one as of right now. But I wouldn't be surprised to see that change in the near future. 8-) What type of heat do yoou have now. We know it likes to drink oil but is it a boiler or hot air?

Hi It's a Old Old Old Oil Boiler Its in a rental I have with real good tenants that have been there for 8 years and wouldn't mind coal. I pay for the heat and have to do something to cut back on cost. They can't really afford to pay much more in rent.

Don't quote me on this and since the dealer ultimately set the price they will vary.

EFM : Around $9K

AHS: $7K

Note that the EFM comes with ASME stamp, I believe the AHS price is for non ASME certified and one with ASME is $9K

Keystoker: starts at $5k no stamp available.

There's Axeman Anderson too and those prices will be up arund those of EFM and AHS.

Harman makes a boiler as well...

Are you definitely in need of a new unit? I know of an AHS that doesn't have a domestic coil that you can drive back home with, hook it up and be running the next day. ($3000). 400 lb hopper, not an auger. If you want an EFM or AA just ask for one, new or used. Keystoker unit near me ordered in May 08, arrived March 09, burned 600 lbs, and now they have decided to sell it and 5 tons of buck (in bags) ($5500) PM me if you like, I can get you burning coal in less than 1 week.....and with a coal bin filled with your choice of coal suppliers.
If you want an EFM, you can start at 3K for a rebuilt unit and go to 9K depending upon your needs. EFM offers the $1500 energy rebate, so you can chop 1500 off you tax bill if that is a concern.
Look into the Royall line of hand feds and stokers. Very nice equipment, latest technology.
I burn in everything but a Keystoker, so if you need to see them running, not in a showroom, but in real life, PM me and you can do just that. If I had a Keystoker, I'd have that heating a building also.
If you like a hand-fired, I have a couple of old timers that still work just like the day they arrived here.
I even have a 1925 Glenwood cabinet heater #16 that has been fired for 3 weeks in a garage. 5 minutes twice a day, 89 years old and if burns perfectly to this day! Lots of choices, don't get sucked in by the fast talkers, read the forum, do your homework, then you will be the winner!

Thank Gawd you know the difference between a boiler and a furnace......whew! That is a dead giveaway....except for EFM....electric furnace man, however they did make air and water units that shared the same name.......

What Model AHS? How old? The Keystoker sounds nice. What Model? But I would not need the coal I live in Pa. about 50 miles to the breaker and have a 4 ton dump. Wow I didn't know the new one's were $8000 to $12000 But with the price of oil and the cost of coal I guess they are worth it.

Thanks Jim

The AHS is a S130. 3K, with no domestic coil. It is about 4 hrs from you I'd guess, sitting quietly at a farm house that needed an AHS 260. The owner is a nice guy who will fill you in if interested. The Keystoker is a K6, brandi-new...except for the 600 lbs burned. Piping, controls and I think a circ or two included. Without the coal, he wanted $4500., but you might be able to buy direct from Keystoker for not much more. I have the phone numbers for each.
The AHS has the belt drive blower option, however I don't know about the thermo ashing control.
Don't overlook the EFM 520's either. They are excellent and parts are the same back many years. Many available close to you. PM me for more info.

Keep in mind a boiler like the EFM has has a auger at floor level which adds a lot of convenience especially if you set it up right and it's practically a lifetime purchase. ;)

If my understanding is correct the ASME stamp raises the cost by $2K which may not mean anything to you but if you wanted to use it commercially you can.

IIRC, Yanche said the AHS has the stamp at that additional cost, I'm pretty sure all EFMs and Axemans are H stamped like it or not. That may be one reason why they carry a premium price tag to begin with.

Harmon VF3000 boiler is around $3500-4000. You might even find some good used ones.

No idea, I would Imagine they take into consideration the type of rental property but that sounds reasonable so maybe not. :P I'd check with your local inspector.

All the boilers mentioned are good choices. You need to know the details of each to choose what's important to you. A lot will depend on who is installing it. If your paying for the labor of moving it the AHS S130 Coal Gun is nice because it's narrow and fits through standard doorways. It's also fully assembled. No heavy boiler unit to sit on top a base. The hopper is easily put in place by one person. All minimize the labor. Of course it doesn't matter if it's your sweat that's doing the work. The new production units have a re-designed hopper, that's square rather than round. It also sets lower into the boiler. Both design changes make the top of the hopper lower, keeping the same volume of coal. Another example of the improvements made over the past five years.
