Reporting Problems with the Website

PostBy: Richard S. On: Mon Nov 16, 2009 9:48 pm

I can't fix something if I don't know there is a problem. If there is something wrong even if it's as mundane as misspelled word (other than in posts of course) please let me know. There's various reason why I might not be aware of a problem such as it being related to a specific browser, a feature I don't use, you might need to take specific steps to duplicate it or maybe something makes perfect sense to me because I understand it but it doesn't make sense to you. For example there was a bug where in IE8 the text in the posting panel would jump all over the place when you had enough text that it was filled. I'm sure it was quite annoying for IE users but since I don't use IE I was unaware of the problem.

I get reports occasionally but inevitably the report is "This doesn't work". It''s like calling up your mechanic and telling him your car is broke, hanging up the phone and expecting him to fix it. :D

When you have an issue please provide the following information:

  • Link to the specific page if applicable.
  • The browser you are using.
  • Describe the specific steps you took especially ones that might be out of the ordinary, for example if you are uploading images and never have a problem but have an issue uploading a very large image let me know that.
  • Provide any errors or other information when the problem occurs, you might just get a blank white page for some errors but let me know that.

Even if something doesn't make sense let me know, if you expect something to work one way and it doesn't let me know.

I have no problem, reporting a problem, if any are seen from my end. I guess I'm just a nit-picker :D and it is interesting to me, to discover what caused it, or if I just goofed on my end.

 I get that all the time at work. Someone will call up and say, "My computer won't work at all!" That can mean anything from "I'm seventeen screens deep in this application and I can't figure out how to get to screen eighteen", to "It's plugged in but everything is dark and when I push the power switch nothing happens." But it's always the same report: "My computer won't work at all!"

I understand that many people may not know what may be significant, for example if you get a blank white page here that isn't going to mean anything to most people and "It doesn't work" may seem appropriate but to me when someone says there is blank white page I know exactly where I need to start looking as that is indicative of a PHP error.

But sometimes it's so vague it's ridiculous. I get emails "I can't login"... That's it, nothing more. And then you'll find out they either forgot their password, username or something simple.

Subject: What Would You Like Changed/Added on the LL Website?

A far more reliable Bulletin Board. It seems nepacrossroads.com does not seem to have a robust internet connection.
The reliability of a support forum reflects somewhat on the manufacturer that uses it.

Yeah, I agree with this. Richard, I am timing out more often, trying to get to http://nepacrossroads.com, over the past month or so. Several times a day now. Is this an issue with your leased equipment? I thought it was my service for a long time now, but I can always get to other websites when I time out trying to get to nepa. :notsure:

They have been having trouble with the server I'm on. If it continues I'll be moving to another one. This is really the first trouble I've had with it in two years and it cropped up about 3 weeks ago. I'm reluctant to move though because as best I can tell the other VPS's on this one must not be used much because the CPU is usage is almost always flat lined. I don't want to trade this one for something tha might be slower. The performance is great as long as it's up and running.

I've had intermittent problems loading pages also. Sometimes the login page, sometimes a topic page. It just times out. Usually pages load very quickly, with my 1.5 MB DSL, but when it doesn't I just hit the stop loading icon and then the re-load icon. Loads right away. I'd say the problem is the receiving server never saw the request. Perhaps something to do with to many requests at one time and some have to be ignored.

Yesterday off and on. To assess this, I fired up the 2001 vintage Del desktop. Both share the same cable modem; desktop direct to modem, laptop wifi. Same problem with both, page timed out or I'd get one down and not be able to advance to the next w/o timing out. Last night ~ 8 was the wost period. Couldn't load from either. So far so good today :)

I had times during the day and night when the server appears to be unreachable. Sometimes it's just for a few minutes, sometimes much longer. I see this on both my home computer and on my work machine. At home my connection is satellite and at work it is LAN.

Another problem is occaisionally the server will not take my post but refuses it. I usually have to retry it numerous times or completely close out the browser and then reopen it. This happens more often on IE7 than on Chrome or Firefox. Chrome seems to timeout a lot more often. When the posts are refused there is no one else attempting to post to the same thread.

Thanks for the feedback but the issue patch has is not in relation to the server problems. I'm aware of them and will get it straightened out.

When I'm asking if he's using different Computer I'm trying to find out if it's different provider the error occurs.

I guess I would add that a couple of times recently I have typed up a post and when I submitted it the webpage could not be found. I could not get back in immediately either. Just thought it was a glitch in my giddyup.

If you can't load a page at all that would be the issue with the server I've already discussed. I'm looking to make move if they don't get it fixed. The outage from last night was extended because they apparently performed some maintenance on it to try and fix whatever is the problem. I don't know what they did but I'm guessing it was hardware related, it hasn't gone down since that I'm aware of so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I really don't want to move to another server for the reason I outlined above.
