Get a call this morning at 11am, 'Sir, we have discovered a gas leak in front of your house by the street, and with preliminary digging, we have discovered the leak, oh, and by the way, we have to replace your line to your house and move your meter outside, since it's old"....

Ah, Crap...I take 1/2 day vacation and get home around 11:30am, the WHOLE Front yard is dug up about 60 feet back to the side of the house.....OH BOY, just what we needed, after we just landscaped it this past summer.....bummer.

No problem, I told the guy, we don't use much gas anyway, after he saw the coal stove in the basement, he Said "Oh, I see you use coal", I use wood myself...hahahha. He didn't have a problem with it and we conversed about it....

Oh well, not much you can do with a gas leak! Rather be safe then sorry.... :)

It's almost a sure thing your new meter won't be a nice to you as your old one. Will they repair the damage done to your landscaping?

Yeah, better be safe than sorry. Nothing you can do there..... As long as they redo the sod :annoyed:

I hope they don't try to charge you for all the gas they lost to the leak to help defray the cost of repairs.

They didn't put tarps down to put the diggings on? Ohhh, what a mess! Oh well, a year from now it'll be just fine. How did they know there was a leak?

you could smell it outside by the curb and they probed into the dirt....and found the leak, but since it was an old line, they HAVE to replace the line with new plastic and move the service outside...no big deal. In fact, when he was trying to unhook the old one that went thru the wall, it actually broke off in the wall. It's disconnected at the street anyway.

The dirt will settle and I will rake it up.... :) Like you said, next year, it will be just fine! They are all done and left by 4pm.

They have a lot of trouble with old services around here some of which might are older than dirt. We found gas lines in this house running through upstairs walls for lighting if that tells you anything. Disconnected of course.

Every few years you'll have a house blow up in this area. Usually the leak will occur at the street and since many of the other utilities are so old it will find it's way back to the house(s) through old unplugged sewer line or whatever.... BOOM!

The tarp is good idea but you think they would have saved the sod....

The gas company will do everthing you ask of them to fix your yard. Even next spring if you are not happy with it call them and they will do what it takes to make you happy. They do not want any bad relations or bad press.

Good thing the ground wasn't frozen, that would have been a huge mess. gambler is right, if you have any problems they'll take care of it.

Cuba, NY looks like a nice town. Your street in particular.
Are you above flood stage ?
I'll put it on my places to visit by motorcycle next summer.
I get to Cherry Springs State Park a few times each year.

Yeah, they don't care much about sod - they just care about getting it dug up as quickly as possible. Time is money .... like they don't make enough off everyone already...

Thanks all!

We just out of the flood stage, actually about 20 feet in front of the house is the 100 year flood line, so don't need flood insurance. The Creek is pretty deep and has a wall on our side and will go the other way if ever gets high.

Yes Cuba is small but nice, if come down by motorcycle, let me know, we can go for a cruise, a lot of nice back roads....
