Maine police take on excise-tax scofflaws.

By professing to live in New Hampshire, Mainers can avoid paying a 5 percent sales tax when they buy a vehicle. They also don’t have to buy car insurance, which is required in Maine but not in New Hampshire. And people who work in New Hampshire can also avoid paying Maine’s income taxes if they claim a New Hampshire residence.

I can't even tell you how many people do this in MA. It's SOOOOOO much cheaper to register in NH than here. When I worked in Worcester, over the course of my job I'd see cars parked in the same spot every day for years with out of state tags. Not just NH, but all over: I;ve seen ND, MN, FL, IN, OH, ME, VT just to name a few.

In todays paper is a story of cops handing out tickets left & right to people cheating Maine by registering in NH. It's about $1.000 if (when) you get caught!

People from NJ with relatives in PA were doing that too. NJ doesn't like that very much.
