There is a really good book called A Short History of Nearly Everything, written by Bryson and also available as an audiobook for those of us that spend long hours in equipment, that starts from the Big Bang Theory and works it's way forward. It is very well written and amusing, informative both in terms of science and history, and gives you an idea of what has already happened to our planet without little humans causing or curing anything. It is about what we know, what we think we know, and how we came to know what we think we know. It originally got my attention because it claimed that the most dangerous place on the planet to live is.... Wyoming. (And that's not because of the cows!)
According to the scientists he interviewed, the earth is 6,000 years overdue for a catastrophic event, considering its history.
