Question about Clean Out Port on 520

I'm going to remove an EFM 520 (maybe a 350) out of a vacant house, and while checking
the unit out I noticed a small Clean Out port on the back of the boiler directly under
the water coil. It seems like a cast iron plate held on with 2 bolts, and cast into the plate
are the words CLean Out.
Any ideas when EFM discontinued this. My 520 is 1964 and does not have one.

I think in the late 50's. Coal Berner or Scrapper....where R U? I've seen them on a 350 I think, but also remember them on 520's made for EFM, but not by them...... I thought it was a good idea, could have two of them. I almost think I remember them on a 700. Perhaps the 520 was a Hi-boy.....too many boilers, not enough time!

Some time in the late 50s or early 60s, these were i believe on the Fitzgibbon or the Lo-Line boilers, I dont remember seeing any on the General Machine or the Cobco boilers. You have to remember a lot of companies built boilers for E.F.M.

I had a boiler installed this week. It is dated 1959 EFM/Cobco and it has the cleanout port in the back.

Just like the idea of that port when it comes time for scheduled maintenance.

Have to find out the date and make of boiler. Plate is on the back, hard to see as there is
no power in house, dark basement, and even with a flashlight and my cheater glasses,
I couldn't read it.
Anyway its been too clod to go yank everything out.

How big are your hands? Not much room in that port....but a good idea. Could have made a port three times the size, and it would be REAL EASY! The common sense injection was skipped at many schools for too many years....sad, but true.

That is what I like about AHS: If they find a way to improve a product.....oh my gawd...
they make a decision and actually DO IT!
EFM, AA water coils: Why Not Fix the damned issue of no maintenance of the gaskets and studs. (OK, they did...some 50 years later....) Engineer out the 'idiot' part of the problem and move on to the next revision. If Detroit had done that 60 years ago, we wouldn't be where we are today.

As some of you have figured out with the differences in EFM Boiler blocks. the subcontractors made intelligent revisions, probably without corporate approval, and history says: Thanks for taking the initiative, Cobco, Fitzgibbon, etc.

Mine has the clean out port, it's a 1959 350 tube boiler made by Loline. You can get a brush into the tubes through the opening.
