14 days...and counting

PostBy: Richard S. On: Sat Dec 05, 2009 8:23 pm

14 days ago the climategate scandal hit and within that time the network news including ABC, CBS and NBC have devoted............ <drum roll> NO air time to the story. I think it's quite clear where there priorities and biases lay, of course you would know all kind of juicy details about Tiger Woods and that story has only been out for a week. How can any of these news organizations truly be taken seriously?

*note apparently NBC did a story yesterday on Friday...

ClimateGate Held Hostage: Day 14

Yet again the Thursday network evening newscasts on NBC, ABC, and CBS failed to cover the ClimateGate scandal. However, ABC World News did manage to devote a two minute story to the release of singer Susan Boyle’s first album.

On Thursday afternoon, ABC White House correspondent Jake Tapper reported the controversy on his blog: “President Obama’s science adviser, Dr. John Holdren, faced a barrage of questions yesterday from Republican Members of Congress about a series of hacked emails at the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit that climate change skeptics have seized upon as evidence that the whole concept of climate change is a hoax.” Apparently ABC reporters are allowed to discuss the topic online, just not on air.

Today's (12/5/09) Washington Post has a front page article about it. Authored by two journalists. It's a reasonably unbiased article and points out the diversity of opinions and the problems with the global models that predict the warming trend. See: (http://www.washingtonpost.com) search for the byline "In e-mails, science of warming is hot debate" Lots of opinions on the blog section of papers web site. Some are thoughful, some are just silly.

Isn't it funny that the first (by a long shot) network to pick this story up was Fox News. Otherwise known by some on this forum as "Faux" News? As if it's not a REAL news outlet like MSNBC.
Like Smitty, I wont hold my breath for the others to catch up.

Whatever side you come down on, it's pretty clear from the emails intercepted that the two leading global warming scientists in the UK and the US have been cooking the books. Whats in it for them? Hundreds of millions in grant money.

I read a couple of op-ed pieces in the local paper but I don't watch TV news so I can't say whether it was covered or not.

Which is the danger in using public money for this stuff. Whether it be climate research or stem cells. I'm against any public funding for research.

There's been some sporadic coverage on the internet from all of them, There's reporter at CBS that was doing really good job.

The point is a LOT of people get their news from the nightly network broadcasts. If that is your only source for news you have no clue this has even happened. For me personally if I were to get my solely from network news or the local paper I wouldn't know this story existed.

I once went on a fishing trip to Canada, everywhere I went they told me I didn't get the news cause I lived in the US. That was back in the early 80's.

I listen to talk radio for the local issues. I like being able to hear what someone says vs. what is REPORTED that they said.

C'mon boys, it's all over the news today. Even MSLSD. And the bottom line is that it doesn't change the body of evidence substantially, except in the minds of Darrell Issa and Jim Inhofe, who are beating the drum.

That ain't gonna cut it. These guys are even less credible than "junk science."

If there's really something there, there will be a group of scientists who will look at it and say, "Had we known that these were the true data, we would have come to a different conclusion." It's not about the wrongdoing (or not), it's about what the best assessment is of the most reliable data.

The "scandal" if there is one, is a side story. The real question is whether it really affects the best view of the data. The answer to that won't be coming from the media. Nor talk radio. In this case, the people who will make the news are the scientists. Until we see a lot of them changing sides, it's not going anywhere; and I still wonder about the timing of these revelations about data integrity, coming so close before the Copenhagen meetings.

There simply is NO body of evidence that LINKS the empirical evidence of global climate change to the SUSPECTED causal factors....any of them...from the so-called greenhouse effect to the solar wind theory.

The science is not settled. Science is never settled, especially by petitions claiming concensus.

The fact that the scientists involved in this scandal DISCARDED original data proves that science isn't their first interest. No scientist discards original data.

What you had is "knee jerk reactions by "certain" scientists, environmentalists, Al "loser Gore etc. (for they're own special interests) and now when the real results start coming from everywhere contradicting what they've been preaching they go into CYA mode. It's simple really, think about it this way, if someone makes a mistake in the work place and it's "found out" human nature is to try to cover it up/lessen the extent the problem, make it seem like it's not a big deal, etc. to save face.....Obviously lots of that going on here.
If it's not that much of a scandal then why did Phil Jones step aside?
