Coal company cuts 500 jobs, blames environmentalists

Chalk up another 500 jobs to the list of jobs President Obama will need to create or save.

A Pittsburgh-based coal company, CONSOL Energy, will lay off nearly 500 of its West Virginia workers next year and its CEO blames environmentalists dead-set against mountaintop mining who have waged “nuisance” lawsuits for the job loss.

So what if theres no drinkable water or plantable soil left in W.V. as long as consol can keep plucking the bit out & ignoring every law on the books, they already collasped a bunch of land, homes & a lot of route 70 in Pa.. Thats the ticket keep the big companies & share holders rolling in money us taxpayers can foot the bill. I was driving a roll-off along Rt.70 about 4 in the morning a few years back when the road just dropped, talk about a ride I was so awake after that I didn`t sleep for the next few days. The state trooper I talked to already knew about it & had a name for it he said it was happening quite often, for the most part the blacktop didn`t crack up real bad just dropped down. Us taxpayers got to pay for that.

That would be 84 mine a consol mine.
I work for consol and hate how they don't seem to care about foundations and roads but its my income.

You'll pay for it one way or the other. When their costs increase so do yours. It's the same thing in every business. When my costs increased so did the cost for consumer, I'd hear the grief from the consumer just as my supplier would hear the grief from me and their supplier would hear the grief from them.

Then are you saying that big business should be allowed to do anything in the name of cost cutting? From what I`ve seen in my lifetime a business cutting costs never seems to trickle on down to the consumer anymore just increases profits for big business & investers. I know that the oringinal Pa. state charter the founding fathers mandated X amount of land to remain forested & I would guess that most have something at least the original ones if not most. Maybe they had enough foresight to guess what human greed would do if left unchecked. I can understand passing on increased costs but then also if costs come down that should also be reflected. I don`t think anyone here would like it if the earth your house sits on starts sinking because some big business found that its cheaper to undermine & remove all the coal with the long wall mining, I never saw a bit price reduction once they started doing that.

You certainly don't want them running amok, I know firsthand what unregulated mining can do. Certainly if the individual is effected (e.g house foundation) they need to be held accountable or if they are caving roads in.

The problem is we have over regulation that effects everyone, there's a line between conservation an impeding progress. As for this particular mining method since I have not seen what the results are after reclamation firsthand, nor have I visited the area or talked to the people there I'll reserve judgment.

I think they call that the "*censored* rolls down hill theory"; or in the case of mountaintop removal, when really big boulders roll down hill.
