HHS Analysis: Health Care Cost to INCREASE

HHS Analysis: Health Care Cost to INCREASE

PostBy: Richard S. On: Sun Dec 13, 2009 7:58 am

Following the CBO report that indicates Healthcare premiums would remain stable compared to projected costs which is bad enough a new report released by Health and Human Services suggest cost will increase and indicates troubles with with Medicare proposals too.

WASHINGTON - Democrats trying to push President Obama's health-care overhaul through the Senate got a sober warning yesterday that costs would keep going up and that proposed Medicare savings might harm the program.

A new report from economic analysts at the Health and Human Services Department said the nation's $2.5 trillion annual health-care tab would not shrink under the Democratic blueprint but would grow somewhat more rapidly than if Congress did nothing.

More troubling was the report's assessment that the Democrats' plan to squeeze Medicare for $493 billion over 10 years in savings relies on specific policy changes that "may be unrealistic" and could lead to cuts in services. The Medicare savings are expected to cover about half the nearly $1 trillion, 10-year cost of expanding coverage to the uninsured.

At his point I do not see how they could possibly go forward with this piece of crap.

Yeah, so you'd think but the truth is they don't care and there is virtually nothing we can do to stop it. That being said, if you don't want this freedom stealing tax bill rammed down your throat, you had better be on the phone to your Congressional representatives and give them what for. Most Senators have in state offices which have 800 numbers; check out their websites; leave a comment; send an email. Let them hear from those of us who have never called before. The polls are now showing that 61% of America doesn't want this "health care" bill. Let the Senators know the consequences of their vote in the next election cycle. Lisa

So what say you Democrats? Still behind the big O on this?

Two government reports, one indicates it will do nothing to help rising costs and yet another projects it cause an increase in rates.

EVERYONE needs to pay in some fashion towards "health care" - no matter their financial situation - i am beginning to get tired of carrying others in the current "system" - everyone paying something must be a part of the equations being considered

Everybody agrees the health insurance system is badly broken. But sadly, 6 mo were wasted soliciting "ideas" from Grassley and a GOP which held complete control of the gov't for 6 yrs and did absolutely nothing to undo the insurance monopoly or get coverage for the uninsured.

There were two obvious choices: universal Medicare, or offering every American the same coverage options which Congress has.

What a surprise that Grassley proved to be nothing but a saboteur. And that the GOP has put no solution on the table. All they want is to keep the cash cow alive for their (and Joe Lieberman's) favorite people, the insurance execs in Hartford.

At the end of the day, I'll take whatever I can get, since some insurance reform is better than none. And I'm over 55, so the lowered Medicare age at least expands my options.

And increases my taxes.

Why not do what your boy Harry Reid threatened to do and repeal the "McCarran Ferguson Act"?

Whats the difference to someone that can`t afford H.I. now if the increased cost stays the same or increases? All these D.C. boys on both sides are doing is protecting their interests. If nothing is done there should be no incumbent re-elected in either party just as a reminder as to who writes their paychecks. No elected position +0 craft.

Something has to be done. The status quo is unsustainable. Medicare will go bankrupt.

Am I a fan of the democratic proposal? No.

Am I a fan of the GOP proposal? They don't have one. All they do is whine about the democratic proposal.

While this may benefit a few and those that are unisured it has no benefit for the majority who are footing the bill, it's not reform. You're not helping the people that are paying in now and if the HHS analysis is correct you will be making it worse for them. It's another massive entitlement program.

Richard, kicking Medicare down to 55 isn't what the Dems wanted, but it's the result we're left with after the GOP categorically refused to participate in any constructive way.

Allowing medical care as a tax-free employment benefit has been wrongheaded from the start, but it's become almost impossible to kill. The downside is that almost literally indentures people to bad jobs and/or marriages, because it's nearly impossible to afford the cost of coverage, whether under COBRA or otherwise, when the employer's no longer paying (ironically, with your earnings).

But that monopoly sure works for the insurance set. Busting that up, even a little, will bring some desperately needed competition into the marketplace. And, if the insurance boys continue to rape us, their worst nightmare, the dreaded public option, will be next.

That's all well and good stockingfull but we need to change the bills title from Health care Reform to Health care Welfare so the general public knows what they are being sold. That is what two government studies have projected, it's not reform.

Then why not do what Harry Reid threatened and repeal "McCarran Ferguson"?

Why should Major League Baseball and insurance be the only two LEGAL monopolies in the country?

Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, testified at a Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday in favor of getting rid of the exemption. A day later, Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the House speaker, said, “There is tremendous interest in our caucus” in such a move.

Assistant Attorney General Christine A. Varney, the head of the antitrust division at the Justice Department, testified at the Senate hearing that repealing McCarran-Ferguson would create more competition, which could help reform industry practices.

Anyone want to lay odds that Reid and Pelosi's campaign accounts got a little larger recently?

If this is greatest good for the greatest numbers there's an easy (although politically impossible) solution.

Give medicare to all Americans up until age 67.

After 67 you have to cover yourself (either cash or private insurance). Save your money (you know, personal responsibility), and you can be as comfortable as you can afford.

You would cover 10 times the number of people and you'd spend half as much money.

The VAST majority of lifetime medical expenses are incurred in the last 30 days of life.

It is stupid to spend $500K of public money on a procedure on a 70 year old to extend their life by a year.

It all depends what your goals are.

:jawdrop:

Jeez, Erik, is your middle name "Rationing?" :D

(Of course, it's only "rationing" when the gov't does it, not when the insurance monopoly does it by telling you that a procedure "isn't covered under your plan.")
