light grey coal

Could someone tell me why in my latest coal delivery alot of the coal is a light grey color?I've been burning coal for 12 years and have never seen this.This year I feel like a coal newbie.The coal doesn't burn as well,the shaking down is a nightmare.Any tips are appreciated.Thanks

Where did that coal come from? How does it look after it's been in the stove for awhile? Does it look like this?

I had some coal a couple of years ago that appeared as your does. Had about half the heat output and about twice the ash. Never bought from that dealer again.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't noticed that kind of "stripeing" in the coal in the stove,plus the black areas of that coal are truly black.I agree that the coal doesn't have the same heat and produces more ash plus alot of pieces that won't burn down to ash.Between the rocks in it and this coal I'll probhably end up dumping most of it.

If we knew where you are we could possibly help you out by recommending a dealer that sells real coal.

What you have is very poor quality coal, probably from the edge of a vein or a refuse pile.

I'm around Hawley,Pa. I think I'll either go with U call we haul,or The peoples coal co. down in stroudsburg next time.Any other suggestions?

People's sells coal from a broker, the quality can vary from just good to fair. There is also Rabel's in Dickson City, basically the same coal quality as People's.

Red ash, easy to light, burns hot. This load is producing more ash then the last one I got in September, but great coal anyway.

$150.00 a ton! Whoa,I spent $216 a ton delivered 20 mi.for garbage coal,and a lot more than 2 ton.I've got some research to do.

That's OK, when I started I paid $265/ton delivered for the same garbage. It's part of the learning curve.
That trip to Harmony costs me an entire day and around 250 miles with the side trip to Coal Berner's and at least $50 in gas, but it's worth it. BTW Harmony just went up, was $140 last year.
