I can remember the first time I saw a bald eagle in the wild. It was during an annual canoe trip going down the Susquehanna in the early 90's not too far south of the NY border. Every year after that we would see more of them and they would always be a little bit further south. Now it seems like they are everywhere on the river. Keep in mind I have lived next to the river my entire life and never saw one on the river until my early 20's.

The first time I saw an eagle, actually 26 of them perched in a tree, was in the dead of winter. It was my first trip as a deckhand on a tow boat going up the Illinois river. This was about 30 years ago so it was rare to see one let alone 26 at once. There was a lot of excitement over it. Hell I see them out in the field in front of my house now they are so common.

I did see something I haven’t seen before a few months ago. A guy at work said he saw a badger chasing two guy across the parking lot when he was leaving at night. I told him he was full of it. Two days later I saw a badger in the parking lot. He ran across the lot, the road and into a corn field. First time I ever saw one.

I'm not far from the river and I'm on a pretty busy road. I came out the front door once and there was one in the road after something dead on the road. My jaw just about hit the floor, I was amazed where it was but even more amazing was it's size. I've seen them pretty close in the wild but it's hard to realize how big they are until you have perspective and see one standing in the road 30 feet away. It was along the lines of Great Dane size.
