This guy is running for congress in Fla. He should run for President in the next election. He'd get my vote. ;)

It all sounds so good, probably because the guy's had a lot of practice, giving pep talks in the Army for 22 yrs.

But it's largely just overblown ear-candy. For example, he says to great applause at 1:58 that "the Constitution says 'promote the General Welfare,' it doeesn't say 'provide welfare'...."

He's wrong. Just the other day, I found this for Jeff's Tom Paine thread:
On the other hand, Art. I, sec. 8, provides broad powers
... To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; ....

Political rhetoric is chock full of inaccuracies and downright misstatements, which you may be able to get away with talking to a bunch of recruits or folks at a rally, but which don't hold up under scrutiny. I'm not saying any side or party either does all of it or is immune from it, just that we should be aware that it happens.

Like all pep rallies, the problems are rarely as easy as they're made to sound.

Kinda like Obama & the 57 states he visited?

I have yet to see any politician perform a flawless speech in my time. All that aside, we need someone like Allen West to MOTIVATE people to get off their asses & do something about the direction this country has been headed ....

Nuthin' wrong with motivation. Just clean your ears, and your glasses, every now and then. What sounds so good may not be real.

But I agree we should keep an eye on LTC West. No doubt he can give a pep talk; the question is whether he can answer a set of complicated questions, whether in a debate or from the press.

"With respect to the two words 'general welfare,' I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators." --James Madison

You are wrong, John. You have been getting into the Kool-aid again. You had better wipe off your chin and your glasses.

Not so fast, Mikey. While little Jim Madison was in the center of drafting the Constitution, the line isn't nearly as bright as he, or you, might like.

Nobody this side of Ron Paul would argue that the interstate highway system doesn't come under the heading of Gen'l Welfare. In fact, the test for when an issue lands there becomes a functional one: when something we need either can't be built and maintained by individuals (like building the highway system), or is broken and can't be fixed without the gov't intervening (like healthcare), the gov't has the power to intervene.

But the bottom line is that the good Lt. Col. was flat wrong in his quote, even if not in his sentiment. But at least the phrase he used was close to what's in there, unlike nitwit John Boehner last summer, who held the document in his hand at a similar rally and then disgraced himself:

So maybe we are right to be careful about what people say is in the Constitution.

When people want you to rally to a cause, is it too much to ask that they know what the basis of that cause is?

When we don't is when we're really drinking the Kool-Aid.

The cause, is pretty clear to me. Stand on your own two feet and dont wait for the government to do for you. It's really pretty simple. You can analize it all you want but the vid speaks for itself.

Well I've suspected for sometime that you were part of some other country. The preamble to MY constitution is as follows.

"We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

This guy spoke extemporaneously and did great. Obama can't order breakfast without a teleprompter. Talk about overblown ear candy! Sheesh! People are wising up. His approval rating was down to 44% the last I saw. Soon it will only be the yellow dog kool-aid drinkers like yourself who still believe.

Good, Terry, so you agree that neither LTC West nor Boehner got it right.

Boehner quoted the "Preamble" to the Declaration of Independence instead of the Constitution. West mistook the preamble of the Constitution for its substance, which I quoted verbatim above.

Trouble with all you tin-foil hatters is that, in your frenzy to pay less taxes, you can't find the framework of our nation with both hands. Nor can you see the great benefits which you reap from the gov't you so despise. What country are you guys from, anyway? :P

Example: how many of you can remember the days before Medicare? I mean, when people retired and went broke and/or died quickly of sickness because they no longer had any healthcare of any sort. Just as Thomas Paine recognized in his time, that was and is simply unacceptable. And, if you still think Medicare is some "demon socialist program," please, please, vote to take it away (so we can rid of your ilk as a political force for the indefinite future).

Finally, if you don't see the similarity between Medicare and the "Medicare buy-in," or the "public option," you're not half as smart as you think you are.

Baloney! The lines were bright and broad to the Founders. It wasn't until the "communist" New Dealers began their exceedingly liberal interpretations of the Constitution that the lines became less clear. They seized upon fear and stole the Constitution's intent. In the last century have witnessed the tyranny of the majority. One of the Founder's intents was to prevent that. The country has been stolen by the marxist left in the 20th century and we need more men like the good Col. to get it back.

What somebody is missing here is the Constitution and Bill of Rights were written so as the government does not interfere with "We The Peoples" rights. Not for the government to limit our rights as they are doing now. They were written to limit the government only! and not to be reinterpreted as they have been doing since the enlightened ones showed up.
