For the past few years I've successfully burned coal with nice blue flames, but for some reason I'm not getting them like I used to. The only differance this year is I'm using stove sized coal as oppose to pea or nut. I'm getting a good red glowing burn with a fine gray ash. I believe the coal is Blacshack. with only 2 degees out last night I still kept the entire house at 73 degrees so I'm really not concerned about the heat output. I just miss the blue flames. Typically I get mostly yellow and white flames. Could it have something to do with amount of air or combustion rate?

Probably the reduced surface area of the coal combined with the higher air flow through the coal.

My theory: Bigger coal makes bigger dancing ladies, BUT, you need a bigger stage for them to dance! Your stage is too small for them to get good footing. ;)

If I found that dancing in my stove I would seriously consider switching back to oil.
