Hello everyone, I am new to the forums. This season we got a brand new hitzer 503 after firing a Harman magnafire for the last 20 or so years. the stove is wonderful but I have a few question regarding the stove's temperature.
Firstly, where is the best place to put a thermometer to get the best idea of how hot the fire really is? We've had it on on the hopper lid as that seems to have the least metal in between the the thermo and the fire itself. However when the hopper is filled up it naturally doesn't give an accurate reading since the coal is acting as a buffer. So instead we took the grill off the front right vent and put a stack thermometer in there. Would this give a more accurate reading?
Secondly after establishing a good place to check the temperature, how hot can it be safely fired? Our old stove we would try to pump at 400 constantly but it was a much smaller fire base. Any suggestions? Thanks for all the help in advance!

We use a half round rutland thermo ust above the glass door...
single wall no air vents behind it...
runs 325* when the winter weather is normal...
200* when it is loaded with Pea coal for warm spells...
Up to 500* when the heat is really needed...
