How much of the auger is supposed to be sticking out of the tube end? I know I caused my feed problem by putting water in my barrel because I wasn't watching my ash over the last couple of cold days. I salvaged as much of the unburnt coal as I could but after I put it in my barrel I notice it was a little to hot so I dumped a little water for safety reasons. So Sunday morning we woke up to 54* in the house emptied barrel to auger to get it feeding and put coal back in. It ran most of the day and about 7:00 PM same thing so I drilled a hole in the bottom of the barrel to let excess water out and refill with dry coal. Woke up a 5:30 this morning same thing so I played with the hand crank going forward and reverse and poking a shovel in the drum until it picked up coal in the auger again. It's been running all day fine. I hope the prior thread on "Wet coal" is the problem. My stupid. I have 2-3" of auger hanging out and it ran fine all last season but it may not be right so any input will be greatly appreciated.
Bill, mine has been running fine for 2 years nonstop with no interruptions. Yesterday was the first time I had a problem. My pipe extends 10" into the 55gallon drum, then the auger sticks out of the pipe another 6-10" or so. I think it sticks out too much but it's been working. I really soaked the coal the other day, we're talking 5 gallons of water for 400lbs of coal. Too much wine maybe...

When the' sprinkler system' kicks on due to an overheated fuel barrel, you are ON NOTICE that something needs to be done immediately....but you already knew that. No harm, no foul....but resolve the issues, we don't want to read about you in the papers!

I've run our stoker on 3" of worm and 10", both OK. I think the standard worm extension out of the pipe is about 10". Too long and it grinds coal at the end of the worm. Go with 8". I've now burned 6 tons this year and no sheered pins yet.

Well it sucks to be me because last night at about 9:30 PM it went out again. I pulled the barrel off cut about 3' off the end of the pipe and wala not out fire this morning. I didn't get to bed until 11:30 PM and I need all the beauty sleep I can get because the wife beats me with an ugly stick and I'm still good looking HA HA HA Ha. I had to go back to work and get a big pipe cutter to cut the pipe because I lost my keys there snow blowing sunday and my garage keys are on them set of keys but that's a whole story in itself. Hey stokerman whats it going to cost me for the drive auger and could you also give me the Grainger number for the blower motor too. I need to start putting together a spare parts inventory just in case it really breaks. I know it's built like a tank but the last couple of days ain't been good for me it seems that whatever could go wrong does. Thanks to all that responded I didn't get to see them until I got to work so my suspicions were confirmed!
