Sitting in my living room last night enjoying a nice fire in the Coalbrookdale... BAM! Huge puff back from the ashpan door being open. Coal ash and dust is all over my damn living and dinning room right before Christmas. Wonderfull... Grrrr

Happens to me when I get impatient & pile the coal on .... then forget I have the ash door open & start something else. Either the explosion or the smoke detector tells me to get back to the stove! :D

Operator error? Part of the learning curve...happens on some stokers too!

Try as we might, we cannot outsmart those who have come before us. Be patient, it is worth the initiation ritual.... :D

Eh I have been burning coal for about two years now. Just forgot about the door. :( The stove is running very nicely this evening burning UAE Pea coal.

Forgetting about the stove door being open is just too easy. That's how I know my stove gives off an unique orange glow at higher temps. Devil505 wrote a thread about stove safety which is a must read for coal burners. He recommends carrying a timer in your pocket to set when ever the stove door is open. Doing that has saved me from over firing more times then I like to admit. Check out his list of safety items at Coal Burning Safety. Lisa
