American Arrogance

I can remember the P of A everyday in school, first thing in the morning with hand over heart in the 50s & 60s. Can`t really recall the daily national anthem, besides that I thought it was somewhere in the 70s or 80s that it was all taken out of schools.

You must not have been in any public school during the 70's or 80's. I seem to remember doing it every day.

You sang the National Anthem every day? :wtf:

What school was that?

They didn't sing it, but they played a record over the PA.

It was an obscure custom in the northeastern USA ... especially MA & NY ... the most liberal states of the Northeast USA.

When I lived in Phoenix in '99, EVERYONE took their hats off & put their hand on their hearts during the Anthem at every race I attended. I noticed that right away, because back home I usually was the only one!

Yeah, I remember the Pledge too. I said that. Hand over heart. Everybody knows that because we learned it in school. Every day.

It's the Anthem which is the question, and has been all along with Obama.

I never was taught to cover up while singing the Anthem in civilian clothes.

P.S. -- My school days were outside Philly. No Anthem. Hand over heart for the Pledge.

Stockingfull:

Congrats on the 2000 posts. That's a milestone,to say the least. The fact that you are a coal burning, defensive, liberal American who isn't afraid to speak their mind is a great part of why our Country exists. The digital banter here serves a need for coal burning, like and unlike people to get together. I'm kind of thinking that you might just enjoy wading into a group of Centrist and /or Conservative Folks and pull their chains just to get a good argument out of them. Sorta like mental masturbation for an argument or two. Competition is great. Keep it going. You keep it lively and everyone stays sharp. Now,to answer your poll....I was always taught that an about face in place of a salute was the highest form of disrespect allowed to be shown, with due respect, to a higher rank. That would be all the way up to the Commander-In Chief. That is what we performed as Pres. Clinton's motorcade came past us in Oklahoma City.
I would definitely do the same now,in or out of uniform. as far as the hand over the Heart, that's how my parents raised me. Here's to the never-ending fight,my coal-burning friend.........Hambden Bob

Hey Bob, thanks for the "salute" on the post count. ;)

I'd never heard of the "about face" as a sign of disapproval, though it doesn't surprise me. As long as you're not in uniform, under command. Seems to me that, if you're in the line of command and you try that, it's not protest, it's insubordination.

And yes, I know I'm vastly outnumbered here but it keeps me thinking, not only about the news, but about history, philosophy and my beliefs, to smack you boys around here. :funny:

Yeah,I know Stocks.....

No one ever said an about face wouldn't hurt, but with due respect,it was performed. Horse-whippin's run both ways, and we sure give them out and receive them as clashing Americans here on the Board. This is a Good Place in Digital Land. Being Blunt....Coal Rocks!!!! :D

Yeah, I'm heating a sizeable house with a stoker with damn few problems I can no longer solve. Even lawyers can do this. :nana:

But you Neanderthals intrigue me, so I stick around here.

Kind of like visiting the ape house at the zoo. :smoke:
