4 or 5 left ... as in no more shuttle? Are they upgrading? I have to see that thing go up ..... I'm going to NASA's website now! 8-)

They've finally realized while the shuttle is technologically amazing it is the most expensive way to put something in orbit you can imagine. The "reusability" provided no real savings.

I think I read the solid rockets are almost the same design used in the Shuttle, just a little bigger.

There's other problems it solves as well, safety being the biggest one. You don't have so many things to break, the capsule is on top of the rocket out of the way of anything, debris hitting the shuttle seems to be the biggest concern now. Probably the biggest safety gain they provide an escape mechanism not possible on the shuttle. That's what the little pointy thing is on top of the rocket.

The last rocket in that image is for payload only which is why it doesn't have it. The pointy thing is a small rocket, basically acts like ejector seat. :)

The Ares V when complete will be the most powerful rocket ever made. 8-) The Ares 1 is a crew launch vehicle.

WOW! Those things are gigantic!! Looks like they're going back to the old days in terms of the layout.

When do they plan on putting the Ares to use? Is that being built here, in the USA?
