Hello All! I started using my Brunco wood/coal add on funrnace this year with nut anthraicte and am surprised how well it is working. I have been using a Hitzer 503 insert for the past couple years now and love it, but it only heated the upstairs of my ranch. I had tried to use the Brunco with coal many years ago, but it only seemes to like soft coal and wood. Some real experience with anthracite in the Hittzer proved valuable getting this stove working well. The only drawback is having to play with it twice a day versus my once a day tending of the Hitzer. Anyone else have experience with a Brunco on coal?

just looked at picturers of your furnace online. I see they have a combustion blower fan? unclear to see, but it looks like it an over the fire fan, not under the fire? its design is a lot like my hotblast. what do the shaker grates look like, do you have a pic?

No pics of the grates, just a pretty standard looking grate. The fan is above the firebox on the outside, but it dumps the air at the bottom of the grates through a channel. There is a cover to block part or all of the fan off to act as a damper. Not real precise, but does ok. Does your hotblast burn coal ok?

depends who you talk to :P . I can get coal to burn really good and really get good heat out of it. it has a "V" shaped firebox a lot like yours, which everytime I load and shake I have to scrape the sides with my poker, but thats not a bad thing. I had to do some retro-fitting with the shaker grates so they would stop breaking. there is a square shaft that exits from the load door which you slide a handle onto for the shaker grates. the square nub broke a lot. read US stove fixes here, spells out what I did. other than these few little things I love that it is now 73 and we had to sleep with the window cracked open

One of my customers has a BRUNCO wood/coal furnace. He doesn't turn on the blower fan for infeed air. He lets the air flow through naturally.

Yes Gitrdone, I know the broken shaker grate story all too well, I had one of the ends break off on my Hitzer 503. Had to replace it and weld the other ones end square again. I was disappointed that it went in only two years. So far so good with the Brunco. This stove was used for wood for about 15 years, but haven't used it the past few since we got the Hitzer insert. Thought I would try it again with some anthracite experience and have been very happy so far. Uses more coal than the Hitzer, but heats the enire house up and down.

Oliver power - I don't use the fan either as the fire gets way to hot with it on. It seems to draft just fine without it, but you have to do a good job with the ash or it wants to plug up and die.
