Totally off-topic here - my career landed me in Monterey, CA for a couple years at the end of the last century. Prior to that move, I had always thought the entire state was teeming with liberals. Oh boy, was I ever wrong. Once you get out of the big cities, it's very conservative.

Wow, Giuliani is even dumber than we give him credit for. Here's what he said on January 6, 2010 while appearing on the Larry King show (http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/ ... kl.01.html). It's in response to Obama waiting three days before offering comments on the underpants bomber.

KING: What did you make of the president's strong statement yesterday of security measures and the like and tightening them up?

GIULIANI: I think the president has to make a major correction in the way he is dealing with terrorism because I think he has mishandled the situation. First of all, it was 10 days too late. This is something you react to immediately, not 10 days later after your vacation. The president of the United States, when there is a potential massive attack on this country, which is what this guy was going to do, should have been on top of this immediately, not 10 days later, 11 days later, 12 days later.

We should have had our response ready. After all, this is not an unexpected act. We are in the age of terrorism. We don't need 10 days to respond or figure out our response. All that does, I believe, is convince our enemies that we are not ready, that we are pondering too much and thinking too much. So, you know, there is -- you want to take some time. But this has been an extraordinarily long time given the magnitude of this kind of attack.

KING: President Bush took six days once in a similar incident.

GIULIANI: Well, six days is less than 10. And the reality is that President Bush was criticized for taking -- what was it, like 20 or 30 minutes in delaying his response to September 11th. And I believe that six days was before the September 11th attack.

I think one of the things that I note about the administration, that I believe there's time for them to change this. I mean, President Kennedy famously by his own admission mishandled the Bay of Pigs early on in his presidency and learned from it.

I hope the president has the whatever leadership qualities or whatever to learn from the mistakes that he has made in the way that he has handled this. He delayed too long in responding to it. His response has been too tentative.

The reality is the very first descriptions by the administration were entirely inaccurate, including the suggestion that everything worked which doesn't give people a lot of confidence. Maybe from now on, there will be a quicker response and a more accurate one.

KING: Bush waited six days on the shoe bomber.

GIULIANI: That's correct.

Goebbels is right. But, the state in the case of Hitler's regime didn't have a free press, thus his propaganda was effective. The free press in the US quickly evaluates a statement's veracity one way or another so that type of propaganda isn't likely in this country.

Unless, of course, the press isn't as objective as we might think. Hmmm. Could that be ? If so, who has the most influence?

:gee:

As for Rudy, his career ended when he left the mayor's post. His face is far too asymmetrical for the presidency. He doesn't play well in Peoria. The last primary proved that.

As I was looking for the Larry King transcript earlier, I was wondering why in the world he is putting himself out there instead of remaining a private citizen at this point. The only thing I could come up with is either he's thinking about running for the Senate against Kirsten Gillebrand or governor against a very weak Governor Paterson. I don't think the voters of NY will consider him for either.

Rudy's hated in NY. For one thing, Mike Bloomberg's shown that you can do a better job than Rudy and make a lot fewer enemies in the process. And don't forget, while Rudy was Mayor, he endorsed Mario Cuomo in Pataki's 1994 race, so Republicans owe him for that. He dumped his wife on the noon news. He had become a bad joke until 9/11 came along and he got lionized for not pissing his pants.

But just think: he crashed and burned last year, and now, with both Senate seats on the ballot and a very vulnerable Gov to run against this year, and he's chickened out on all three races.

That's gotta tell you something.

He's become as much of a pundit whore as Dick Morris. With his 9/11 brand in tatters, he's toast. And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. 8-)

Hated?

Certainly his popularity has declined in recent years. It's more like even in the polls but swings either way depending on who his hypothetical opponent is. He would only win office in NY against a weak democrat. That's how republicans win in statewide NY elections. But he is done and has been since he quit as mayor. He isn't interested in office anymore. He knows he's a weak candidate against most democrats.

Pundit whore? I think he just likes the limelight. You don't see him anywhere near as much as Dick Morris.

On the first point, Rudy was and is reviled by many, not only as the Pope of DAISNAID ("Do as I say, not as I do"), but as Bernie Kerik's sponsor, a wife-dumping cheater, and a press-hater of Nixonian proportion.

By the second statement, I meant to imply quality (actually, lack thereof) not quantity. Both are just streetwalkers who've changed their stories to suit their current employers...

Yet Rudy was elected NYC mayor twice by adoring democrats and has achieved stunning levels of popularity intermittently throughout his career.

Perhaps your vitriol simply describes what it take to be a politician these days. 8-)

Hell, Mike, Rudy had the Liberal line in both of his runs for Mayor. After Dinkins, the city wanted "competence," so yes, a lot of people were drinking his Kool-Aid.

But he proved to be an arrogant, self-absorbed, prickly, immoral, DAISNAID bastard. Sort of a political Nixon, but with the personal morals you guys liked so much in Billy C.

Bloomberg loves the power too, but he's wielded it far more deftly than Rudy.

In liberal NYC, or the rest of NY? That's just like MA: we have east of 495 (of which politicians consider the entire state), then the rest of the state west.

I'd imagine Rudy would be well liked as a politician outside of that hellhole.
