Google Ads Making Page Hang

Re: Reporting Problems with the Website

PostBy: Patch On: Fri Dec 18, 2009 8:34 am

Hello Richard,

I've been having problems loading the web page during the day. Right now at 7:30 am, there's no problem, but during the day, it doesn't finish loading. I get the banner at the top, and nothing else. Just the green logo and an empty page trying to load. Is this a Google Ad problem?

If there are any questions contact me at jtf @ dejazzd dot com.

Thanks for your hard work.

Are you accessing site from same computer when this happens?

Sorry for the delay. Yes, Monday morning, 7:30 am, and the site loads quickly. This is a work computer and I'll try a laptop latter in the day. Will report back with more details.

My loading problem appears to be computer specific. At 7:30 am it was working fine, then around 10:00 am, it stopped loading the forum. Tried another computer, ..... and it's loading. Problem machine is running Win2000 (and I ain't updating), this laptop is running XP. Maybe OS related? The Win2000 machine functions normally on other web sites. (It's my work horse ... three monitors, running multiple programs simultaneously)

Back to work.

So if I understand it's same machine on same connection? You're not using it on different ISP connection? Only thing that has changed is the time?

Google Ads Making Page Hang

PostBy: Patch On: Tue Dec 22, 2009 9:10 am

This is truly screwy.
Richard, I have one ISP feeding a router to a local network with two computers, desktop Win2k and laptop XP. The majority of my time is on the desktop machine, and this is where I am having problems.

Last night, I checked the Nepa site and it wouldn't load. Restarted the OS, launched the browser, and No Load.
This morning (computer still running from the restart last night), and Nepa site No Load. Crap! Did a screen capture for your entertainment, but couldn't post because the site NO LOAD. !#$#%%^)(*&HKJYU&*% :x So, off to do my morning updates, recheck the Nepa site, and here I am. It loaded! :) Nothing has changed on my end. Only the Nepa site is acting this way on my machine.

When I did the screen capture, note how it was in the process of loading google. I know nothing about web programming, but it looks like the link to google is somehow broken.

As a temporary fix if you disable javascript it should prevent that from happening however you'll be losing some of the functionality here and on other sites if you leave it disabled.

Tools  Options  Content  Uncheck Enable Javascript

You can permanently block ads with Firefox using adblock and still maintain JavaScript functionality.

-------------

My guess is that your version of Firefox is not playing nice with the flash based ads.

Which FF version and which OS version?

Have you noticed if the ads you do get are only text based?

Do you have flash installed?

I'm not suggesting you install flash if you don;t have it installed, I'm just trying to determine what is causing this.

I've done a lot of testing and have identified my problem, down to the specific line of html code. I am at the end of my diagnostic abilities, with no idea how to find a solution. Richard, maybe you can help, or someone knowledgeable in web programming.

During the diagnostic process, I made some test html files (34k bytes each) and a desktop video of my mouse clicks (4.8 meg raw avi, 570k compressed swf). How shall I proceed? Can I upload these files to the forum?

There is nothing wrong with the nepacrossroads server. The page load failure is related to javascript and my machine.

I need to know what version of FF, it is probably specific to that.

Technically no you can't, HTML and SWF are not allowed for security reasons. If I allow them someone could upload content that might be malicious.

AVI because it is not supported by built in player is not allowed but can be uploaded inside a zip file as any file can.

For the HTML you can rename it .txt but kind of pointless because the browser is going to either going to parse as text or ask what you want to do with file.

I had this problem back on December 30, of last year:
123009_1237.jpg
(101.71 KiB) Viewed 13 times
View: New PagePopup • Select:BBCode
[nepathumb]18125[/nepathumb]

but it was maybe a one-time event. Still, it was part of what drove me into a "what-the-@%&&%$" mode.

It seems there are a few of us that are regularly having problems. The hardest part is defining the problem, and verbalizing the problem so that we can all communicate and compare notes.

My system:
OS: Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4
Browser: Firefox 3.5.6
Java: Version 6 Update 17 Build 1.6.0_17-b04

My first thought was: is it the server? (always blame The Mayor first)
- test1: Look for a relatively static page on the server and see if it loads.
http://nepacrossroads.com/kb/NEPA_Crossroads_Knowledge_Base
This page has always loaded for me. Server looks good.
- test2: Poke around on the server and see what else is available. Richard is also the web master for a band that has an audio stream, hosted on the same server(?) >>Richard, Am I correct in assuming this is the same server?<<
http://www.40lbhead.com/headradio/index.php
This page always loads. Server looks good.
-test3: Look at the html source, from a page that is not loading. In Firefox type Ctrl+U and I get:
011310_0901.jpg
(106.67 KiB) Viewed 6 times
View: New PagePopup • Select:BBCode
[nepathumb]18126[/nepathumb]

All the way down to the copyright and bottom labels.

Everything I see, indicates that the forum software is generating html and the server is pushing the data. My page load failure problems are in another direction. The server looks good.

This *should* be fixed at least on my end. The Google ad is not loading on your end, why that is I have no idea.

Since the container for the ad had no dimensions the browser is waiting for the ad to load so it knows what the size is before rendering the rest of the page. That's why you would get all the HTML and it wasn't viewable. The fix was simple, just add a container for the ad with dimensions. :)

This should even fix a lot of the instances where the page will hang for split second, I've noticed that myself sometimes.

If this hasn't fixed the problem let me know.

I have isolated the problem to the google "custom search" line. Added remarks and the page loads:
010610_0904Frem.jpg
(149.84 KiB) Viewed 12 times
View: New PagePopup • Select:BBCode
[nepathumb]18135[/nepathumb]

Also, if I break the connection in my firewall, the page loads:
122609_0903.jpg
(98.18 KiB) Viewed 9 times
View: New PagePopup • Select:BBCode
[nepathumb]18136[/nepathumb]

Sometimes the page loads OK. If I then force a reload, the page fails. Something that is cache related??? I don't know. I'm temped to buy a new hard drive and update to a new OS.

To post this reply, I've had to play all kinds of games to get past google.

Forgot about the search box, that has a container with dimensions now too.

Let me know if it doesn't work.

The patient is still sick. 90% of the time, the page doesn't finish loading. This morning, it"s working. Why now? No Idea.

Over the weekend, I did a lot of testing. MS Internet Explorer exhibits the same behavior. Page stops loading at Google Custom Search. If both browsers choke on loading the page, then there is something else causing the problem.

Other web sites that have Google Custom Search also fail to load properly.

Found an old hard drive, partitioned, formatted to NTFS, and install XP from my laptop restore disk. Everything works. So there's nothing wrong on the hardware side.

Erased the drive, partitioned, formatted to Fat32, and installed Win 2000. Page load failure!

Google Custom Search may be not be compatible with Windows 2000. There are reported problems with loading Google Chrome, on a Win 2k machine:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=78aa8d4e1afc83cf&hl=en

With Google Custom Search, you can harness the power of Google to create a customized search experience for your own website.
* Provide fast and relevant search results
* Make money with AdSense for Search
* Invite your friends and community to contribute
* Automatically search across links, bookmarks or blogrolls with Custom Search on the fly

Made another adjustment, hopefully this will fix it.

There's two problems here. Your problem is the file from Google isn't loading and that I can't help you with.

The second problem and important to me is because the file isn't loading the page fails to render which is certainly something I want to fix.
