Amish Exempt from Insurance Mandate

WASHINGTON — Federal health care reform will require most Northern New Yorkers — but not all, it turns out — to carry health insurance or risk a fine.

Hundreds of Amish families in the region are likely to be free from that requirement.

The Amish, as well as some other religious sects, are covered by a "religious conscience" exemption, which allows people with religious objections to insurance to opt out of the mandate. It is in both the House and Senate versions of the bill, making its appearance in the final version routine unless there are last-minute objections.

That certainly opens up a can of worms. The mandate requiring insurance companies to provide insurance to anyone can only work because of the mandate that everyone have insurance.

I guess that falls under seperation of church & state. As far as I know all the Amish around me pay cash for service, have quite a few benifit dinners & auctions to help some pay medical bills so they can save the farm. Sad when you think about it if you say you have nothing you get everything for nothing (paid for by us) when your hard working & honest, have a small plot of land that you work the hospitals will pull it out from under you.

But that swings both ways, you're exempting a specific religious sect from US law because of their religion.

Thats why churches don`t pay property taxes, because of religion. I would guess also that maybe the American Indian will be exempt also because (a good one) they are still not considered American citizens.

Are Indians U.S. citizens?

Not until 1924 were all Native Americans granted citizenship. Before this juncture only individuals who were members of federally recognized tribes and "naturalized" individuals were given the rights of a United States citizen. Presently all Native Americans born within the territorial limits of the United States are by law citizens.

I know native americans get out of paying some taxes, might just be the ones that live on the reservations. Thats why they can sell some items at lower costs. They also don`t have to serve in the military if there should ever be another draft, their service is all voluntary.

In the last few days they've also exempted many large unions from the "cadillac tax." Some putz from the administration being interviewed and trying to justify it, actually said it was only for people in "high risk professions" who NEED bettr health plans like fire fighters. I guess being a teacher, UAW worker, stevedore/dockworker, and coal miner also qualifies since they are also exempt. This administration and it's federal version of chicago politics disgusts me. Is it any wonder the governor got grabbed trying to sell a senate seat? That's chicago politics. If I take $100 from you on the side of the road as a police officer in exchange for not writing you a ticket, I get arrested for bribe receiving and you get arrested for bribery. If I agree to vote you way in exchange for $300,000,000 (LA), or to exempt my state from medicare increases, that's just politics?? All we can do is hope you folk in MA send a message tues and vote out the dem. Scott Brown for senate. That'll be as big a wake up call as the ultra left have ever seen. Time to move things a little closer to center..............

Right..
That exemption can be viewed as a "privilege" granted bu the federal government for members of that sect...
It will certainly be challenged.

Their auctions and benefit dinners are roughly akin to the "passing of the hat" which, on its own, is a form of self-insurance
In a large enough community, with many close members, it can work...
They don't have to show a profit, they don't have overhead, and they probably don't drink, smoke and etc...
They are relatively safe in their "horse 'n' around" :woot:

American Indians have been a special case when it comes to health care for some time. They already effectively have universal coverage paid for by the federal government through the Indian Health Service (see http://www.ihs.gov/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Health_Service).

OK, the Native Americans, Nebraskans, the Amish, Congress and the unions don't have to pay for it it now. By the time they get it passed, the only ones that will be paying for it are the ones that couldn't afford it in the first place.
