Thanks to the 15 replies that I have received in regards to trying to restart a fire that has gone out with mapp gas, I guess the only solution is to clean it out and start from scratch. Happy that I did not spend the 49.00 dollars to buy the torch. Great forum!

The torch is good with copper ... just not with coal. :D ;)

Hate to differ but I never have a problem getting my stove started with mapp gas.

Usually have it running in about 2 or 3 minutes.

It also helps that I bought the torch to do the plumbing on the large copper pipes when I did the install so I did not have to make the purchase just to light my boiler. ;)

one thing I learned, is don't bury the torch tip into the coal if you have the auto ignitor on the torch, it melts the wiring to the sparker thing in the tip...mind died after I tried to start my stove. Finally ripped it apart and had to put a new wire in to get it to spark again.

I use coal mice or some charcoal/wood shaving in a small bag....

Are you using the torch to directly lite the coal, or are you using it to lite charcoal or wood ?

I mix crushed matchlite with the rice coal and make a small well in the pile so that I can get the flames of the torch under the pile. As was indicated in a previous post, it is not a good idea to just push the end of the torch into the coal. Making a well lets me get the flame onto the bottom of the pile. Once the matchlite catches it will ignite the coal. Works everytime for me and takes just a few minutes.
