coal fired hot water heater

coal fired hot water heater

PostBy: dlj On: Wed Jan 27, 2010 7:59 pm

Many moons ago, I used to have a small coal fired hot water heater. At that time, I didn't think much about these things as having various coal fired aparatus around was common.

Thinking back on it now, I'd really love to get my hands on one of them again. I have no idea what brand it was or anything, so I'll just have to try and describe it as best I can remember.

It was fairly small, about 2-1/2 tall, shaped kind of like a big headed bullet. The top was a double walled cast iron piece with a hatch for a door kind of at 45 degrees from center where the coal was fed. This top piece had a water connector in the middle of the back and dead center in the top. That way the cold water could flow into the back and the heat would let it rise out the top.

The bottom part was pretty simple, had the point where the grates could be shaken and then a bottom door with the air control on it. The one I had didn't have a floor, it was made to be sitting on a dirt floor and nobody cared. I don't know if it was just missing or made that way.

Does anybody recognize what kind of stove I'm trying to describe? Anybody know what they are called, got a picture and/or even better anybody know where I could buy one?

Now that is really close. Found one reference that had a picture, that is very similar.

That would work in fact if I could find one.

Got any other great leads on names?

DLJ, what model Glenwood are you using? Do you want the bucket-a-day to play with or is this going to be functional?

Whistlenut,

I'm running an old Glenwood Base heater. See my posts on Finally! Got my Glenwood Base Heater installed! if you are interested in seeing my Glenwood.

I want functional. I'm thinking of putting one in my basement to make hot water for several applications: domestic hot water, in floor heating hot water circuit, and possibly an exterior under the driveway heating system. I have no way to make hot water right now except using electric.
