Would this work??? I only have to do about 9 custom pieces so 18 ends of pipe??

for the price -- and for the number of fittings you have to do -- and just for the pleasure of having a tool that you don't have to have back at 5pm

Sure -- I would buy it!

but -- best intentions -- you know........

With dope - you crank the fitting home - and your done - that's it - the fat lady sings - its over -

Don't back the fitting up - it will leek - you must take it apart and start over if you need an adjustment an hour later.

With tape -- ( and tape and dope ) you can adjust later in the day with some confidence.

That's it for me - you can talk about what the Romans did to seal a joint -- who cares -- this is today. :?

didnt they just lick them to seal them?????

Yes, it should. That is a very low price, I doubt you could buy one Ridgid die for the price of that entire set. Plenty of oil and take it slow, back off frequently to break the chips. About every half turn with that one, you don't want to get greedy.

Mino, you cannot make short nips with a hand threader. Maybe 5", any shorter, really tuff if possible at all. You'd need a sturdy pipe vise too.. Just buy a run or two of the size ( id ) nipples you need. The only way to go IMO.

I have and used a Harbor Freight pipe threader. The 1 ¼” threads looked nice enough but when threaded into a fitting I found them to be a bit too small, they threaded deeper into the fitting than the threaded nipples I had. In the end I had 1 contrary joint that I was able to finally get tight and 1 that didn’t leek at all from the start. The Chinese stuff that Harbor Freight sells is a craps shoot, I have bought a few things there with mixed results.

Don't even attempt to thread a short piece of pipe, you will want to blow your brains out if you don't have the pricey, fancy tools it takes to do it. If you need shorter length nipples, the supply house should have what they generally call a job pack. It contains usually 4 of the various shorter sizes and two of the longer sizes up to 6-12 inches in length in the size you desire depending on the selected pipe size. By buying them in bulk, they are quite reasonably priced compared to buying piecemeal nipples. When done, you will have an assortment for the future projects and or modifications. ;)

Now it is time for my annual lecture on pipe.

Anyone know what the box stores charges to cut a thread on a piece of pipe? Mino just so happens I live pretty close to you and have a pipe threading machine if you get stuck with your project I will help you out.

P.S. Just talked with a neighbor who recieved her (January) electric bill from PPL OVER $500.00. She is 71 years old. Makes me SICK! :oops2:

I have this set: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/ ... 70_777_777
Not the greatest but It's always there when I need it.
Got that pipe vise years ago at a garage sale.
Chinese Home Depot pipe was made in dirt floor factories by slaves in bare feet, what do you expect. The machine oil on it and the bulk boxed fittings you get is probably laced with pcb's lol. But I end up using it due to price and convenience.

Yes they went together OK. It was a female copper adapter that seemed to thread in until it bottomed out. Lots of dope and torque and it still dripped until it got hot and then after a week it completely sealed up and has not dripped since. I think with regular fittings it may go better. With these cheap Chinese tools quality control is usually not that good and the next one could be better or worse. For the cost I think it is worth having “just in case” but not if you plan to be a plumber or do a big job.

If Brian has a power thread cutter and will do it for you for a nominal charge that is the way to go. I love power tools!
