I have another question, would you suggest a manual damper or Barometric damper for a Franco Belge coal stove ? :?

baro for sure it continually adjusts or compensates the draw up the chimney as the wind across it changes thus keeping the same consistant amount of air going thru the stove and thus the coal bed. the manual one has to wait till the noise from the howling wind wakes you up so you can dance across the freezing cold floor and adjust it...... :)

manual pipe dampers are best suited for wood burning stoves.

coal stoves run slower yet much more even and predictable when the draft is controlled and regulated consistantly and thats where the barometric dampner is used.

get a "rc" type as opposed to the less expensive you see at the hard ware stores....

there are several types of baro's

usually the corner hardware store has the b34 style and it is somewhat cheap.. not just in price

the rc type is more robust and I believe accurate and can be identified by the "sliding" weight

the type m is the strongets of em all I believe

Some may disagree with me but I have a very strong draft on my chimney as it is five stories high. Because of this I leave my manual damper closed all the time and I get great results. I still have the bero but I leave it closed all the time. Before I had the manual damper I just had the bero and it was open all the time sucking all the heat out of my house.
