I hate to inform you smitty but it was your hero Ronnie Ray Guns that did away with most deductions. He claimed he was lowering your income tax at the same time he was taking away deductions from everyone but the wealthy who by the way he did give a huge break on taxes. But don`t take my word for it Google or Yahoo or whatever your preference is.

How come when Bush was President, I could claim medical expenses, cars I donated to charity, PLUS I didn't get penalized with higher taxes just for being married??? THIS ALL CHANGED RECENTLY ... not in 198? ..

I don`t know maybe I just don`t spend enough on drugs but I haven`t been able to meet the criteria for drug deductions for decades. And I`ve never been well off enough to be able to donate a car so I never even tried that deduction & I haven`t done my taxes this year to know what your talking about as a marriage penalty, could be I`m in for a surprise. But I do believe I`m up tp the current times in as far as what & who caused this mess. Theres the little matter of two unfunded wars, one of which IMO we should have never had at least not until the first was really honest to goodness done. Then there was the unfunded medi-care drug bill which was a good thing except no funding & not to mention the two tax cuts mostly for the wealthy but no spending cuts. We went from a surplus to a debter nation with huge bills outstanding, now I`m not saying it was all George & Dick theres a lot of blame to go around & I don`t agree with everything thats been done by B.O. but everyone that critizes never gives a viable alternative just says we shouldn`t do that. But ever consider what would happen if something wasn`t done? Don`t forget the first bail-out wasn`t B.O.s you can easily tell because it was a unfunded gift (hush money) to wall street. How about saying what should have been done & how & why we would be better off.

Just thinking here I`m probably a good bit older than most here, I remember what all the average Joe used to be able to deduct & that all changed under Reagan. IMO he`s the one that really put the screws to the average middle class family. I briefly looked up 2009 fed tax changes & as far as I could see without really digging into it the only changes helped me & I didn`t see anything about a tax penalty for a married couple. Maybe we are just way too many tax brackets apart for me to notice what your talking about, I don`t have to go very far at all to find mine(starting from the bottom).

samhill,yup,we probably are just that,OLD,--I'll drag it back to the 60's & early 70's when tricky Dick took a fall for other peoples stupidity--and people like Abbey Hoffman & the Panthers & the Weatherman got the youth of this country so riled up, they tore this,not great but better then most, government apart.They also didn't have a back-up plan---Sooooo,here we are today--like I said before--the president is just a figurehead to the rich--BO's just a little to cockey for my taste--for the record,my wife & I already did our taxes & got our federal return back yesterday---same income as last yr.--my SSA & Momma's pay from the local school cafateria---we got a little less back this yr.--I also did not see anything about punishment for being married(other then being married itself)I can't say that,Momma's my buddy

SMITTY,you & I have some similar views about things--I just went to the site you posted--the key being "could be reimposed"like I said Momma & I did our taxes & I didn't see it--negative begets negative & the same for positive--I ran a 40 footer from Vt. to Mass in the winter back in the 70's--2 trips a week--used to hit the produce mkt. in Chelsea then hit N.H. for sea food & the likes--we delivered to alot of ski areas-Sugarbush,Killington,whatever's in Stowe & about 15 bed & breakfasts--I'd grab a lumper or 2 while in Mass.--they were some of the most negative people I'd ever met--hated to interupt their drinking,but they needed the money for same,you haven't been spending to much time w/ them,have you??Stay positive & try & spread your views to people--you have some good ones--plus you have a sense of humorSeeeeee ya,freetown

There you go Smitty, the way I read your post you had me thinking there was a change in there already. There are always proposed changes & probably always will be even if they would ever go to a flat tax. I was always told to worry about the things that are under your control first & then your just kind of stuck with those you can`t. Those you can try to work against to change in Gov. anyway with the power of the vote but with people voting in the same career politicians I don`t see how much will change & certainly not fast. The bulk of those in D.C. on all sides are working for themselves & thats the system we all have to change before we can expect much change.
