Commuted back to JFK airport this evening.. I was quite nervous about waiting till this afternoon to commute in.. but the storm was pretty much a 'no-show' at JFK. There are a few 3-4" snow berms from the plows clearing the few shallow drifts on the taxiways, but many of the grass areas are clear. Only a few spots of ice on the taxiways and ramps from vehicles driving on the snow.

Currently the weather is clear skys, 22*f, wind from the north 17mph gusting to 28mph. I don't know the windchill but it feels like -10*.. bitter cold, damp wind. At least I won't have to deice my plane in the morning, it should be clean, clear of ice/snow contamination.

I'd imagine landing on black ice is not a desirable situation ...

At least you weren't in the middle of the storm! For me, I think I'd be better of in the storm than anywhere near NY!

That's roughly door knob height.. Yikes !! I'd have to fire up the excavator and the 4-yard loader to clear that !! And then if the wind came up, the county would have to brush the cobwebs off of the old 'V' plows to clear the roads.. I remember several storms like that in the '70's. I had a 1000' long driveway back then.. what a pain to keep clear of drifts!!

Well Greg,it looks like you've completed most of your journey in good shape. I had wondered how many Pilots were literally seeing "which way the wind blows" to get around this one. As for myself and the rest of you fine coalers out there, enjoy the day, stay warm and once again show your neighbors without heat just how much of a Neandrethal you are for staying warm with 'da coal...! 8-)

The snow finally stopped. I'll try to get some new pictures up soon. We were able to sort of keep up with the shoveling through out the storm and so today only have just a little touch up to do. A plow actually made one pass down the court. Now we have one lane of packed snow to drive on but no turn outs for passing; best just stay home. My F150 is only two wheel drive and is pretty much useless except in perfect weather. I carry 8 bags of coal in it year round in order to have decent traction; yet another excellent use for bagged coal. :D Take care, Lisa

Here are the after storm photos -

The periodic shoveling my support crew and I did sure helped in the long run. If you look at the last photo - along the fence - that's the neighbor's bamboo which normal stands 10 or so ft tall. It won't hurt my feelings if doesn't make it back. Did I ever mention I hate bamboo? Last night dead limbs where falling throughout the woods behind our house but none hit any houses that I'm aware of. We never lost power but a lot of the surrounding neighborhoods did. So now it's one for the books and we are on to Wednesday when we have a 70% change of snow in the forecast. :D Take care, Lisa

Check back to the pictures I posted yesterday during the height of the storm. You'll see that the weight of the snow had the fabric stretched way down. That can cause the fabric to rip and the springs to lose spring. With no prompting, the kids went out and shoveled the snow off. They do a great job taking care of the things they love. :) I wish that would extend to my stuff a little more. Lisa

It's been a while since MA has got that amount of snow. We used to get that much every storm, but not this year. I'm good with that though! ;)
