I just got a xbox 360 and went out and bought a new modem. this gives me 2 modems. I had to call the cable company to have them put the MAC on the account and all was well. I went to use my computer last night and it was giving me some no internet crap. I called the cable company and they said I can have only 1 modem unless I want to pay another internet monthly fee ($30) . I want the xbox hardwired so I do not have to buy the 100 dollar wireless thing for it. Can I just return the new modem and buy a router and use the computer wireless and xbox wired? and if so what else do I need to make this work.

thanks

You need a router. Typically they have 4 ports so you can connect 4 devices to them either wired or wireless.

One thing to note if you're going to go wireless you need to set it up securely. For hardwired you only need ethernet cable, looks like phone wire except it has really bigger plug. Like the one going from your modem to your computer now. If you want to set up wireless for the computer you'll need to get/have wireless PCI card.

If you haven't already done so you will need to have your ISP use the old Mac address for original modem.

Get Vonage or another VOIP phone service while your at it, kill 4 birds with one stone.

Phone over internet, check.

Television/cable, check.

Internet access, check.

Wireless radius all the way to the mailbox, check.

Yes. Most wireless routers and bridges have E-port/ CAT cable connections. Is your modem near your XboX? Make your connection from modem to router to XboX, PC ... Will need a wireless router and wireless RX device in your PC. The usb dongle style are cheap and have good speed. Look for 802.11 N. Ck http://www.newegg.com for Pc needs. Shipping is great and at good price. One Ethernet cable will come with a router. Bestbuy will carry if your in a hurry.

YEs, just hook up a wired/wireless router to your cable modem and you are all set. I have a Netgear 624? or something, 4 wired ports and wireless.

allright thanks guys. I will be headed to bestbuy to pick up a router and one of those usb cards for the computer. do you need to buy a high end router or is a lower priced one good enough? I have fast internet (10 mbps). I will get a N type router instead of G.

A router is good to have even if you only have one computer. It adds a level of protection and insulates your computer from the internet.

i just got back from walmart and now am using wireless a I type. I bought a netgear WRN2000v2 it is working well my current speed on it is 137 mbps and signal strenght is excellent. so I must have installed it right. It was more expensive than I thought it would be though. 120 for the router and USB thing. It was a lot easier than I was planning on to install, it took only about 10 minutes.

thanks for all your input

Be sure to enable security features so your neighbors can't access your wireless  :)

yeah,
I did that. When I put the usb device in and it was looking for router it brought up just about everyone in the neighborhood and asked which one I wanted to connect to. The router I bought has a button that syncs it with the usb thing because they are matched.

wireless network connection
speed: 65mbps
signal strength: excellent
status: connected

You must have Verizon DSL. Mine always said 10Mbps ... but in reality it was 720Kbps.
