Becoming Negligent and Not Happy About It

Consuming beer and remembering to close the draft control aren't complimentary tasks . With burning coal finally becoming second nature I am really sucking at remembering to shut down the air control. I really need to start using Lisa's technique of wearing a timer around my neck...... before I set the roof on fire.

Clearly, giving up the beer is not an option.

That would be correct. If Lisa would just call me every morning and every evening to remind me to shut down the draft control all my problems would go away.Black_And_Blue wrote:Clearly, giving up the beer is not an option.

Let me tell on myself here - last week I was driving down the road, not too far from home, when the timer around my neck went off. Ooops! Blessedly, my son was still at home and I didn't have to turn around but it could have been a diasater. The lesson I had reinforced is the timer, the canaries (CO monitors) and appointment calendars only work when you pay attention to them. Be safe, take care, LisaMillworker wrote: I really need to start using Lisa's technique of wearing a timer around my neck...... before I set the roof on fire.

I set the kitchen timer it works every time I use it. If I don't forget to.

Perhaps the key to the memory and the timing is in the beer equation. You see, subliminally, your brain is absolutely thrilled to be receiving the fruit of your labors, namely your personal homebrew rendering of refreshing adult malted beverages. The act of coaling your hand-fired,while thrilling,is not as endorphen-charged as the above mentioned hydraulic sandwiches you've been brewing and consuming! Try this:
When it's coal happy-time and you go to the stove, take one of those commercial-made impostors with you. You know the ones, they claim to be America's Ale or Beer but they're owned by some cats from South Africa or Austria. You know, the clowns that screwed Latrobe and bought Rolling Rock, stoled the recipe and closed the Brewery. The guys that killed the Hamm's Bear that used to live in the land of sky-blue waters. Do your coal chores and while waiting, start to choke down one of those gaggers. The extended time it will take you to consume that barf ought to be just what you need for stove high air and before you wretch out and leave the room, you'll be there to put your air back to where it belongs.! It ought to work..........

But see, you had the timer, and it went off when you weren't too far down the road. Without the timer, you would have done what I do. Drive 40 minutes to work, then wonder if you closed down the air. Drive all the way back home only to learn that I had indeed shut down the air. If I had the timer around my neck I wouldn't have made it all the way to work.

I wouldn't be able to drink that swill, and I'd probably end up using it to wet down the coal instead.Hambden Bob wrote: Do your coal chores and while waiting, start to choke down one of those gaggers. I have done the "Did I remember to close the ash door on the Harman?" and the "Did I turn the stoker motor back on on the Alaska" deal too many times. When I go back and check all is well. It's when I don't have those moments of hopeless doubt as to what I just did that bad things happen (Alaska-stove goes out, Harman-house burns down).

You are in good company - I think I may have even topped you. Not only did I walk away wide open but I left the little paint brush on top of the stove that I was using to brush away ashes from the lip of the door.Millworker wrote:Consuming beer and remembering to close the draft control aren't complimentary tasks . That plastic handled brush was melted like cheese all over the top and the house stunk for 2 days.
