Just another reason why.... I'll have another beer

Which is better for you - beer or soda?

Posted at: 02/08/2010 9:18 AM

WHEC-TVIf you had a few beers on Super Bowl Sunday, there's some good news for you. It appears beer could help make your bones stronger.

New research suggests that beer is a significant source of dietary silicon -- which increases bone mineral density.

A University of California-Davis study examined brewing styles and raw materials of beer to see where the silicon comes from and how much makes it into the final product.

The highest levels of silicon were found in hops and in the husk of the barley -- so beers with greater amounts of barley and hops had the biggest bone benefit.

There is bad news though for regular soda drinkers. New research suggests regular consumption of soft drinks could increase the risk of pancreatic cancer.

A study from the University of Minnesota followed over 60,000 Singapore residents for 14 years.

Those who consumed two or more soft drinks a week were 87-percent more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer than those who never drank sodas.

They believe high levels of sugar in soft drinks increase insulin levels in the body -- which contributes to pancreatic cancer cell growth.

Not like we needed another excuse.... :D ;)

George

I don't drink soda or other highly sweetened beverages, the amount of sweetener in a can of Coke is equal to 9 teaspoons of sugar. I prefer coffee (hot and black, no sugar), unsweetened iced tea or beer.

 I drink whatever I can get my hands on that has at least a 5% alcohol content ...

I like beer, but I ran out & refuse to buy it in MA ... so I've tapped into my stockpile until the next NH run.

I was doing Bacardi & Coke ... HEAVILY ... during the bowl, & listening to 80's heavy metal afterward! :punk: :woot: See the Last to post wins #2 thread ... :D

"But the study isn't a definitive answer. Out of the 60,000 individuals studied, 140 developed pancreatic cancer. Of those, 18 cases occurred in patients who'd consumed large quantities of soda, 12 occurred in those who drank soda occasionally, and 110 occurred in those who never consumed the sugary beverages.

In their analysis, the researchers acknowledge that the small numbers limit the power of the data, and "giv[e] potential to a chance association." The team also cites four previous studies that found little or no connection between soda and pancreatic cancer.

There are a handful of definitive or suggested causes for pancreatic cancer, making this study even more difficult to interpret. Aside from red meat consumption, smoking and diabetes, risk factors include genetics, ethnicity, old age, obesity and even excessive alcohol consumption."

There is also a book called The China Study. My obnoxious ex sister-in-law read it and now turned into a vegan. Try her vegan lasagna sometime if you want to experience tastelessness. It says animal protein is what causes it. Whatever.

Party on..... I'm just jealous, had to quit drinking I can't control it.

I drink much more beer than I do soda. I might have one soda a week and that's a lot for me. It's not that I don't like it I just don't have a craving for it. At least beer has some vitamines and minerals from the grain and yeast (when unfiltered).

By the way Dan757, no need to be jealous...knowing your limitations and sticking to them is something some of us never seem to learn, myself incuded  .

For the few of you that might want to really understand why a beer is better than a soda you might consider education on nutrition. I just finished a 36 lecture DVD series on the topic. Absolutely outstanding. If you have some serious health issue like diabetes, heart disease or obesity you likely have been told by your doctor to eat better. Of course the advise you get is like the sound bites on TV not very useful in real life. This 36 lecture series will make a difference. Give it a try. It could change your life or someone you know. It's sure changing my families. The course is available in DVD, audio CD and down loadable mp3's. The lecture topic sre posted below. The web link is here:

 Good times! It's contagious too -- during that sad time in the mid 90's when 80's music was "un-cool", I still listened to all of that decade. My buddies used to laugh at me -- I was "the 80's guy"! But now everyone is back on my bandwagon. We have a good time reminiscing at parties. I got all of them back into it. :D 8-) I should be getting royalties for all the business I brought to Sirius-XM!

Nothing to be ashamed of or to regret!! You were smart enough to do something about it. I have a few friends that weren't .... and they are no longer with us.

I have a good friend out on the west coast that has been in recovery for almost 20 years. He enjoys watching me make an ass out of myself. After spending a couple years with me in AZ, he says he doesn't miss the booze one bit!! Between the hangovers & apologies ....... He looked at me & said "WOW -- I can't believe that was me years ago!"

I hear you brother! There's nothing like having a few beers and listening to 80's rock. Sirius-XM channel 41, Hair Nation. I love that station! :punk: :D
