Hazelton coal..not so good

PostBy: coalrocks On: Tue Feb 09, 2010 11:01 am

Just bought 1/2 ton Halzeton Anthracite Nut Coal, Wow what a big difference from the Blaschak coal I had. Hazelton has a strong smell of sulfur outside not inside the house,no blue flames mostly yellow /white. So many clunkers that when I shake always getting jammed.Burns quickly seems the heat output is low compared to Blaschak. Well it's true you get what you pay for. As a contractor I tell people that all the time ,The $25 a ton I saved buying Hazelton was not worth it, going next week for some Blaschak Anthracite.

Some of the lowest ash highest BTU coal comes out of Hazleton. If you get a load of the really good stuff from there you'll want nothing but that. Don't blame "Hazleton" coal. Blame your supplier or whoever they got it from.

I'm new to coal burning so I'm just going off my experience. Maybe I got something else he told me it was Hazelton. Maybe I'll try a different supplier

Just so it's clear Hazleton is a city, there's few places in Hazleton producing coal. That area is known to have some the hardest anthracite you can find. It can actually get so hard it may be hard to burn but I'm guessing that is not the case with what you have. If it's that type of coal it will have a dark glassy gem like appearance and consistency. When you crack a piece of that coal it can have shards as sharp as a razor and that's not an exaggeration. It burns hot and for a very long time and will produce a fine white powdery ash.

Richard

You had the experience. Just recieved my last 2 ton for the heating season and would like to tell all that when I pour my coal into my hopper sounds like pouring shards of glass into my stove. People you cannot go wrong by purchasing coal in this area.   Its hot and it lasts.

I have heard jeddo has been running some really good product as of late> A few of my friends just got from there a couple of weeks back and it was like richard describes really shiney and very glass like and it leaves a powdery ash for a stoker.

I guess I did nt ask the right questions when I was purchasing coal. I asked where it came from and he told me Hazleton area. I read about Hazelton and it said it was good region for good coal, I did nt ask what company it came from. What companies in that area are known for good coal? Does anybody know of a coal yard in or near Easton ?

i got my first ever load of anthricite at Zubecks in Berlin Pa and was told there that it came from up Hazelton. now that being my first ever load of hard coal i dont have much to compair it to but i can tell you its not the good stuff. there is some slag in it like it came from refuse pile and i too get a sulphur smell(nothing like bit but its there)dont get me wrong, it burns a hell of alot better than any bit coal ive ever burnt, longer, hotter burns, but i just know there is better coal to be had out there. still planing trip to uae and god willing their coal will be much better

Like one of the other replies indicated not all Hazleton Coal is mined by the same company. There are small contracting companies throughout the area. One of the biggest coal companies in the area is the Jeddo Coal Company. Jeddo had found a Mammouth Vein a few years back that stretches for miles.
