I thought this was pretty neat. Found it posted on another forum I read.
This amateur video is absolutely amazing: recording the precise moment when a rocket goes supersonic, which coincides with the moment it passes through a layer of ice crystals in the atmosphere, creating a rippled effect that is just astonishing to see.

I've seen the same effect on other rocket launches at both Kennedy Space Center, FL and Vandenberg AFB, CA. For those of you viewing the video and don't what too look for, look for the concentric rings at the time the video suggests. They radiate outward from the rising rocket. It's best observed by first watching the entire video and then using the video scroll bar to get to the right time, use the left mouse button held down to freeze the video. Panning the mouse will advance or retard the video frames. Sometimes the sonic boom is quite loud, depending on how far away you are. The video here was taken from a public access point. At Vandenberg I was often much, much closer. The noise is spectacular.
