Really, I dare say we all have some fun burning, coal , wood, lets leave it at that. If next thing you found yourself with Free NG for ever . What would you do? Would you miss the stove, or do it for fun? Silly I know.

I would drop the coal in a heartbeat. I'd spread it out and park on it. But that's because I struggle with a hand-fired. It takes work. Natural gas has the same allure; something that burns and warms the cave. Coal means heat that doesn't cost money, to me; but that's only until I run out of basement coal.
It takes work though. I never get mad at the fire, only myself for not tending to it! I'm not a coal traitor, I love coal. You're talkin' free NG here.
Free natural gas forever? I'd have gas lights outside, and set up a furnace so I could see the flame! Convert the coal stove to gas. Gas fireplace in the bathroom, in the closets, gas grill, and gas truck, car and motorcycle. You know, have a home LPG maker. 200 gallon gas water heater. I'd get a 30' above ground pool and heat it to hot tub temperature. Gas heated sidewalks and driveway. Gas heated greenhouse. Gas generator for free electricity.

Thanks for the dream!

Like dann757 I would try to use it as many ways as I could, but I still would like at least a fireplace to see an open fire once in awhile.

A friend once said "three things most people like are, fire, running water, and a view."

I gotta go with SMITTY on this one--I seriously enjoy my coal experience--all them little internal thingamajigs in the gas appliances confuse me--our house in VT was all gas--globular lights, gas hot water, gas refrig, combo. gas/wood oven/stove--been there done that--like I said,I like my coal :) Hey SMITTY,is that your JIMMY

I think I'd still go with coal. There's something different about the feeling of coal heat that isn't like wood or forced hot air.
