Per Capita GDP:

https://www.cia.gov/library/publication ... 4rank.html

1 Liechtenstein $ 122,100 2007 est.
2 Qatar $ 121,400 2009 est.
3 Luxembourg $ 77,600 2009 est.
4 Bermuda $ 69,900 2004 est.
5 Norway $ 59,300 2009 est.
6 Jersey $ 57,000 2005 est.
7 Kuwait $ 55,800 2009 est.
8 Singapore $ 50,300 2009 est.
9 Brunei $ 50,100 2009 est.
10 United States $ 46,400 2009 est.

If you remove the micro states (#1,2,3,4,6, and 9) then you have only Norway, Singapore and Kuwait beating the US. When you consider the considerable oil resources per capita in Norway and Kuwait are skewing the data, then you can say that the US is the second best place on earth for opportunity after Singapore.

But, here is where the problem is; net trade, current accounts:

https://www.cia.gov/library/publication ... 7rank.html

176 Nigeria $ -9,394,000,000
177 Mexico $ -10,120,000,000
178 Brazil $ -11,280,000,000
179 Turkey $ -12,540,000,000
180 South Africa $ -15,600,000,000
181 Portugal $ -18,610,000,000
182 Belgium $ -18,920,000,000
183 United Kingdom $ -32,370,000,000
184 Australia $ -33,310,000,000
185 Canada $ -36,320,000,000
186 Greece $ -40,820,000,000
187 France $ -43,670,000,000
188 Italy $ -55,440,000,000
189 Spain $ -69,460,000,000
190 United States $ -380,100,000,000

Thats the per capita wealth mike, the study I was referring to is that we are second only to the Swiss with something like 90% of the wealth being held by 10% of the population. As they say therich get richer & the poor get poorer, if that top 10% would start to invest here rather than overseas we might have a chance of finding jobs again.

If you would work like one, maybe you could be like one. Resenting the rich? Work like they do and you won't have time to resent them.

I agree, but this country is already de-industrialized and sold out. Just my ignorant opinion, but if the left wing socialist traitors would stop trying to redistribute the wealth so millions of people that are unable to grasp the concept of a work ethic will vote for them; if business were encouraged and not discouraged, then maybe this country could survive.

The US is the number 1 manufacturing country in the world at this time, China is still a close second.

You still don't get it, sam.

1) you continue to bemoan your position based on the wealth of another. (envy)

2) you still have the best opportunity HERE in the US to become wealthy. (sloth)

3) you are wealthy compared to the people in the rest of the world but you aren't satisfied. (greed)

As for investing here:

Why would the rich want to make widgets here at 7.25 per hour when they can make them elsewhere for 1.00 per hour? If you did then you can't compete with the [i]other[i/] rich guy who is using that labor, right?

Why is the concept of capitalism lost on you? Do you think you are a capitalist? If not, what exactly are you?

I used to argue with my father about this. Yes, we do "make stuff" however, my father was right too. The problem is that we have de-industrialized in areas in which the unskilled jobs existed. Many people needed those jobs in this country. There is no place to go for the high school drop out.

No mike you don`t get it, I`m pretty much satisfied with what I have in life, I don`t believe that I am at all lazy, I have a decent pension that I worked over 30 years for, I also still have my own part time business that is doing something that I enjoy. While its true that we still make a lot here, its also true that we are the largest importers of foreign goods so we can`t be doing too well in manufacturing unless your considering farming as such. Capitalism isn`t lost on me we are just getting more to the caste system. What nobody in Gov. has the guts to do is to gradually do away with the generational welfare system but we have, its just another one of those don`t look it straight on & it might go away type things. You seem to want to lower the standard of living in our country & let the few run wild but if the majority aren`t able to buy then who are you going to sell to. Everything is in perspective where wages are low also is the standard of living, it sounds like you would be happy going back to slavery.

Does that include military manufacturing? That's not a retail item and creates no wealth because it is paid for with tax dollars.

I've been in manufacturing for two decades. I assure you, there's a lot less of it today than there was when I got in.

Sam, I don't REALLY think you are lazy or greedy but you ARE envious. You can't stop talking about the rich and their "sin" of holding wealth that was earned (or inherited) as if it was your business. It clearly is not your business. Do you want anyone telling you what to do with your money? Clearly not. Envy is a sin that gnaws at the soul just like greed or sloth, or my greatest sin, gluttony (not a joke).

We are indeed heavy importers and we buy on credit. It will be our undoing. We do manufacture a lot of stuff and some stuff that is not really stuff, like software. The stuff that we farmed out to China and others is, by comparison, low value, low technology goods. They were manufactured by cheap unskilled workers until unions and the government made that unskilled labor very expensive. There are plenty of people in China who would love a $2.00 per hour job and no one in the US who wants a $7 per hour job. Those jobs are likely lost for a century or more. The politics of the left and the disparity of rich country vs poor country drove them out. It couldn't be avoided unless you would rather have a closed economy which is impossible unless you prefer stagnation.

I am heartened to hear you say that the generational welfare system is a bad thing. Indeed it is. Unearned benefits and sloth usually ruin people, though at different rates and in different ways.

I don't want a lower standard of living for anyone, but what you need to understand is that the success of the US in the last 100 years is a aberration in world history. It was an anomaly. It has never been replicated. It never before was this good. It was unique. The US was lucky to have human and natural resources of the finest quality assembled in the right place at the right time providing unparalleled opportunities. It will be difficult if not impossible to sustain the middle class we know going forward, barring the introduction of a new and extremely cheap form of energy. We are fortunate to have lived in this time in history. But, nevertheless, the US is a boom town that may have seen its better days.

That's an interesting opinion.....

Like President Reagan, President Bush has not shied from calling evil by its name or declaring his intention to defeat its latest incarnation, terrorism, just as free men and women of all political persuasions, here and abroad, defeated fascism and communism before.
