Amazing what kind of information is out there.
Coal and railroads go together like peanut butter and jelly.
A ton of info.

When I was a kid I would visit my relatives in the Olyphant, PA area. Right across the RR tracks was the largest mine waste pile I had ever seen. To me it seemed like a mountain. All alonge the pile there were chunks of coal the size of your fist. I bet could have heated my aunt and uncles house for years with what I could have dug out of there. In those days it didn't pay to reclaim this coal and it was just dumped.freetown fred wrote:When my Dad was a kid,he used to walk the tracks going to school w/ his American Flyer wagon (in Wilmington,De.) to pick up coal that fell off the coal cars to heat thier house
Last time I went through Olyphant the pile was long gone and most of the other mining debris cleaned up. Subsidence is still a problem there but at least it doesn't look as depressed as it did in the 60's and 70's.

Years ago I used to visit this railroad siding and pick coal from between the tracks that would spill out of the hoppers and use it in a warm morning at a rental I used to live at. I was surprised at how much they used to spill. Kept me heated for a lot of years.freetown fred wrote:When my Dad was a kid,he used to walk the tracks going to school w/ his American Flyer wagon (in Wilmington,De.) to pick up coal that fell off the coal cars to heat thier house

I'm doing model trains , N-Sacle. I have a coal mine and gang load of coal cars. From the coal mine to the power plant I put in. It's alot of fun building the building. I'm still laying track. Haven't gotten to doing any senery yet. I enjoy it and takes alot of time to do things right.
