I am confused, is there tax on bulk coal here in NY? I have bought coal from one dealer and there was no tax and then I bought from another and I was charged tax.

Here's what my coal man says; No sales tax on the coal used for heating the residence. If you're heating a out building, it is taxable.fastcat wrote:I am confused, is there tax on bulk coal here in NY? It depends on the local law. There is no state sales tax on residential heating fuels. For example propane in bulk is not taxable but in small tanks and cylinders (presumably not used for heating a home) it is taxable. In Chenango county there is no tax on coal as a residential fuel except in the city of Norwich. In Norwich there is a 4% local tax on coal.
