Looks like I picked wrong damn career. These people are out of their minds.

Waste Management's five-year offer includes a wage increase of $1 per hour in the first year, bumping up the current pay rate of $26.29 per hour by 3.7 percent.

By the last year of the contract, the average driver's annual compensation will reach $109,553, Waste Management said, and the company will contribute more than $15,000 per year to each employee's pension fund. (View the full proposal – PDF)

In addition, Waste Management said it is offering a one-time $1,000 bonus to each employee if the contract is ratified by April 3.

The 109k per year is based on the total package, not wages alone. 26.29/ hour based on a 2,000 hour year equals 52,580 gross pay/ year. Based on the cost of living in Seattle, that's a fair wage.

When I was laid off last year I had an interview(along with 20 others around a table, some left early) with waste management for a helper/picker. They were paying $10/hour  , I asked if I received my cdl if they would let me drive if someone called off sick, they said no. If I worked for them I would not be considered for another position untill I was there for a year. After the year they still would base their job opening on most qualified. If you receive a cdl liscence and everyone wants 2+ 5+ years experience how do you ever get a chance. I was making more $ on the unemployment. I would of been willing to throw garbage if they would of been willing to give me a chance to drive if someone was off. My unemployment was more than $10/hour and I was called back by my employer.

Trying to get job driving now is going to be tough without any experience. Going to be a lot of out work drivers with a lot of experience. It was mentioned in the article they have 1,600 applicants to fill the 350 jobs.

This was actually big problem for myself because I couldn't afford to pay what a an experienced CDL driver gets nor did they want to take on the extra work of coal delivery. I also couldn't afford to pay inexperienced driver if you know what I mean. I could drive a truck around for decade and break nothing, give it some rookie and the damn thing will be junk in 5 years especially in the coal delivery business.

Sounds like a UPS situation. Spend a decade slogging doing the crap work for a chance to drive and make the better money.

I worked for Waste for just under 5 years .... and even factoring in the excellent benefits, I made nowhere near 6 figures! Most WM shops are non-union, & drill that point into your head upon your hiring. Mine was no exception.

I made great money though -- enough that it surprised alot of people. One day I was driving a 15 year old beater .. then a 9 year old beater .. then a brand new '07 with all the bells & whistles. My buddies picked up on that pretty quick. But I'll also tell you that there's more than meets the eye when it comes to working for a large company like that. They can get away with alot more than the average company. It was common knowledge in my shop that if you got hurt, you'd better sweep it under the rug, or your job would be on the line. This would be drilled into you during DAILY safety meetings. The pressure from corporate was so great, that shops would come up with their own solutions to meet the demands. Did you watch undercover boss on NBC? I about peed myself laughing at that show -- so fake, it was sickening. We constantly had bosses spying on us while on route & writing us up for violations ... while under the same breath, they'd say pick up the pace, or get out! On top of all that, you had to deal with a city full of liberal douchebags with the biggest egos & worst attitudes in the entire continent of North America. I wouldn't go back to that if they offered me $49/hr!! It's just not worth it!

The haulers here in Montgomery Co use a lot of work-release from prison, it reminds me of something like you would see down south like one of those movies with the chaingangs. Wonder who makes the kick back money.

I know when I worked for U.S.Steel they would always come up with this average wage & believe me I was no where close to the amount they made public, I think they averaged in what all the big wigs got. At least I got a small pension out of the place so I can`t complain too loud.

The $109K is based on wages and benefits. It's also based on a 46 hour work week.

Base Wages: $79K
Pension: $15K
Retiree Welfare Trust: $1K
Health and Welfare: $19K
