McAfee antivirus program goes berserk, freezes PCs

PostBy: 009to090 On: Wed Apr 21, 2010 6:25 pm

NEW YORK – Computers in companies, hospitals and schools around the world got stuck repeatedly rebooting themselves Wednesday after an antivirus program identified a normal Windows file as a virus.

McAfee Inc. confirmed that a software update it posted at 9 a.m. Eastern time caused its antivirus program for corporate customers to misidentify a harmless file. It has posted a replacement update for download.

McAfee could not say how many computers were affected, but judging by online postings, the number was at least in the thousands and possibly in the hundreds of thousands

That's classic. I have the whole Honeymooners series on DVD. I'll have to dig them out of the video cabinet and watch them again.

I like collecting comedy DVD's. I have M*A*S*H, The Honeymooners, The Simpsons, part of the Friend's collection, and working on George Lopez. I think the next one is going to be Tool Time.

I also have some oddball stuff like, Harlem Nights, and a Larry the Cable Guy DVD's. I was going to get the Blue Collar DVD's when they came out but I figured I'd wait until the price came down.

Whoops, you got me wound up and I got off topic. Sorry.

:D

I've had both ... and they are both resource hogs. Getting rid of either made my computer 100x faster. Plus Avast is free. 8-)

I had the same problem with Norton. Got rid of it and it boots fine.

McAffee was always the cheapo virus solution and I don't think it was as good as Norton. Of course Norton has it's own problems and I've since migrated all my PCs to AVAST!. The professional version is cheaper than Norton and seems to run better too.

I've used Avast or AVG for years on different computers. Never had a virus, and what's better than free?

On one of my 2 computers I'm using AVG's free program, after Norton became a problem I let my subscription run out. On my other PC I was waiting for the subscription to run out before downloading AVG. I checked that PC...there's no trace of Norton anywhere, it's as if the program removed itself when the subscription expired. AVG is downloaded and scanning now.
