Recently I was asked to drive to a farm that also builds buggies, and handles buggy parts besides farming. My amish neighbor was in a fix for the parts and it was a long trip for the horse that late in the day.I took his 19 year old son along because he knew where we were going which was off the beaten path.On the back road,we saw a bunch of amish school kids on their bicycles because school had just released them. They were gathered and were chatting at the stop sign when we got up there.I was asked to hold the car a bit. My rider started talking with them in Penna Dutch out the window. After a short time they smiled, waved and pedaled off. I said ,what was that all about since I do not understand Pa Dutch. He said that he told them they should not be wasting daylight with conversation and that they should be home helping their parents with the farm chores. This kid is 19 years old,and that is so typical of what I have seen of this wonderful tight knit group. What wonderful neighbors, you cannot know. And yes it is true, the kids never speak when elders are in conversation.
