State shuts down Lehigh Coal
DEP says Coaldale mining company has flouted rules for years. 40 jobs at stake

State regulators shut down one of the region's most historic coal-mining operations Monday over a series of environmental infractions, throwing the livelihoods of about 40 people into question.

Tom Rathbun, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, said officials have tried working with Lehigh Coal & Navigation for years to avoid forcing people out of work, but the company has continued to flout mining rules.
