Thank You all around guys. As mentioned in my opening post, I am experience in burning coal. My old Warm Morning was very easy to burn and required nothing more than daily shakes and refill on the coal. I really like this Hitzer it looks good (green color, gold door, viewing window, dual circulating fans) and it produces more heat on less coal than the Warm Morning. Once I get this ash thing taken care of I should be fine. As for a poker I'll look at the augar anchor and if it suits my needs with a little adjusting I'll go that route. (YES I am capable of doing a little cut/bend/weld). I was aware that the ash was killing my draft and something had to be done to eliminate that buildup. Being old and lazy, I figured that throwing this out to you guys for advice would use less energy on my part. Anyway I do appreciate all the help, Thank You all again. Dave K. in N. E. Pa.

Try shaking down a little bit more so you get an even red glow the full lenght of the ash pan.(not just in certain parts) When enough ash drops from the the grates above it will brighten up and give you that even glow. Also, you can poke a little here and there where needed from the top or bottom of the grates. This helps and allows a little more air flow through the fire. I burned a Warm Morning 523 for 29 years with the round grate system and then went to a Buck Model 24 Coal Stove with a different type of shaker system and it took me a little while to get use to it. With the knowledge of the members on this site you'll have it right in no time.

Interestingly enough when I cleaned out my 30-95 at the end of the burn season, I had close to an 1 1/2" of ash built up and laying on the slope of the firebricks all across the back and front. I do poke her all season long and shake every 12 hours. I have to empty the pan about every 3 shakes. I was simply amazed that after shaking down and cleaning unburnt coal out, I still got another two pans of ash. That ash can pack tight! :)
