Format C: ????

OK
I want to reinstall XP on my old 20gig Maxtor hard drive. I don't know what is up, but the pc has slowed down and i suspect some kind of spyware or malware or virus that AVG and Norton Utilities isn't picking up. In the start menu recently used programs box I see remote desktop connection is there, which I never use. I also got Limewire and wonder what might have gotten in from that.
I have a second hd on the pc, another old Maxtor 20 gig, that I put what I want to save on.
Problem is, I just want to put in the command format C:

Can't do that from command prompt in accessories menu it won't let me.
Can't do it from booting to safe mode with command prompt it won't let me.
I put in the XP disc and tried installing XP- was hoping I could format C: from there, it tells me the XP version I have is newer than what I want to install and won't let me.
There is a floppy on this pc but it hasn't worked since I can remember. I will try to make a start up floppy if I can find one in the desk here someplace.

I just want to reinstall XP and I have service pack3 on disc.

I'm hoping the nagging slowness and glitches can be corrected. Have a 3gig P4 and a gig of ram in this machine.

Use DBAN to erase the drive first and XP will install.

Delete the active partition then create a new one, that will let you install windows.

Thanks.

I tried to delete the active partition from the XP setup, it wouldn't let me. Can you tell me how to go about this?

Or will try the DBAN.

You can try running ComboFix on it before you format it. I use it to clean the worst spyware off computers.
You can download it here> http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

Directions for using it are here http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
I never install the recovery console when prompted.

Good luck.

Thanks again. I took out Norton Uyilities and the pc is almost satisfactory again. Might as well try combofix.

There is a 'norton removal tool' which cleans up the trash left behind by norton...
http://service1.symantec.com/support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Combofix is a nice automated rollup of several good cleaners...
After you run that several times it runs in safemode also..
Get these...
Malwarebytes
Superantispyware
Spybot search and destroy
Download them from http://www.filehippo.com/
Run them in full scan mode after installing and updating...

Combofix does not run in the background on a computer...
It just runs then it is done...
The others play nice with each other and AVG...
They do run in the background with the paid version but have a low overhead...

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it". In most cases this is only going to provide a very minimal performance boost if any and you're risking creating very big problems.

That is why we do an image of the drive before we screw with it...
You can get back to when you last did an image...
If the fix was worse than the problem you can go back and try a different tool...
Sure it takes a bit more time...
Do it right the first time...
Knowing I have my fallback position makes the job less stressful...
Much more enjoyable too...

Very happy with the re-installation of XP.
I was putting it off, but the PC was going downhill fast. Booted from the xp cd, and realized the internet USB keyboard I was using wasn't being recognized, I swapped in a retro Keytronic keyboard and, at the repair console I was able to type in format C: and it formatted the hard drive this time. XP set up formatted it again, installation seems nice and fresh now.

Everything is working so much better. The PC was getting completely screwed up, I don't know if it was Norton Utilities, Limewire, unknown malware or what.

The Intel mobo I have, D865GSA is getting pretty old. Glad I found the mobo installation disc, I needed it to get the onboard sound going. Download from Intel didn't work. Also went with the onboard network port instead of the pci network card I had been using.

I have ms office 2000 which I use for Word and Excel. It demands a "qualifying product" or it won't install. I had saved an old copy of Works, which I had to show to Office before it would install.
