Coal berner:

I saw that stove this morning and I did notice the low price. It was only $29 this early a.m. I sent the owner an e-mail asking for more pics of the outside of the stove and especially the inside. My concern is he states the upper cast inserts are burned out and that they kept burning the stove. I received an e-mail back. The owner told me that he could not get anymore pics of the stove due to it being in storage. Hmm. With the cast inserts being burned out, what does the stove look like in that area. I can't tell from the picture if the enamel is damaged. I was interested in purchasing the stove until the owner told me he can't produce any pics of the condition of the inside of the stove and better quality pics of the outside enamel. It may be a great stove, however, without pics its a gamble on the condition and if it usable. You know how expensive parts are for these wonderful stoves.

Are there any American suppliers of parts for these stoves? It might help people out there who have these stoves. I'm with you on giving it a good looking over before commiting to buy it. The seller sounds a little evasive.

Lack of pictures is a cause for concern...
already mentioned how the baffles are damaged but they still use it...
This stove has been used by the family for 30 years, but we are moving, so it is getting sold. It could use some new blast plates (interchangeable internal liners) but we have used it with the bad ones for many years without an issue.
But the stove is in storage...
I can help loading this into your truck, right now it is loaded on a Radio Flyer.
Something is not right here...
Please ask questions before bidding, there will be no refunds, returns, or whining for any reason. Payment in advance, postal order or checks are fine. No curbside bartering or on site testing.
On site testing not allowed...

The only parts supplier I have been able to find so far is http://www.partsplus.com. I'm not sure where they are located since they do not list their location on the website. Two years ago when I went to the site, they listed a lot more parts for the stove, however, now they only list a few parts. This may be due to they are in the process of changing websites and not all of the items have made it from the old website to the new. I plan on contacting them to see if the current list of parts will be all they offer. Sad if it is for before they listed every part for the Jotul 507's. No matter how you look at it parts for the 507's are not cheap (upper cast insert rear $73.33 per insert, side cast inserts $61.37 per insert) and this is before shipping and tax. To replace the one rear and two side cast inserts in a 507 it would cost $196.07 before tax and shipping. Partsplus.com currently does not list these parts anymore.

I did some research last year on the fire brick and contacted the company located in Europe that cast the fire brick for Jotul. The company is still in business and they stated they would cast any brick type, size, thickness, or whatever I wanted. When I mentioned I was looking for brick for Jotul 507 I was informed it was no problem. From my converstation, apparently they still have the casting for making the brick on hand. I didn't talk price but was told it would be cheaper to buy a bulk amount. I didn't ask what number was considered bulk. If one had to or wanted to you would have enough brick for your stove for life. I agree CapeCoaler, the lack of pictures is a concern. Freetown Fred I don't think a wood fire would be hot enough to burn through the cast upper inserts. To get wood coals that high in the stove would be pretty difficult. Coal burning against them will burn them out very quickly. My wife demonstrated that fact and the reason my 507 now has brick in place of the cast inserts.

Hi all of you Jotul 507 fans. 8-) At the moment I am high bid on this stove. As everyone has pointed out it's very hard to tell the condition of the stove....The amount of $$$$ that I bid will work out for me ( if I can use it for a few green parts....). The drive to Concord is 175 miles one way so it will cost more to pick the stove up than the amount I bid.

If you win the bid on the stove, don't forget to post some pics of it when you finally pick it up. Good luck on your bidding.

Not fond of the surdiac line...
Check to see the plates inside are not cracked or warped...
You should be able to pick it up for short money though...

I think you will like the Surdiac if it is in good shape. The heat exchanger in back is of steel coated with porcelain enamel. Any chipping here leads to rusting out. The two clean out ports in the back are the suspect areas. Like the Franco Belge stoves they are hard to move without damaging something. Strip as much as possible and pick up with a strong friend. They are too wide to go through a doorway on a hand truck. Good luck.
