Sandwich says no to holiday beach closure

SANDWICH — The town has drawn a line in the sand and is refusing to close its beaches tomorrow night to protect nesting shorebirds.

The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service had requested the beach be closed from dusk through the morning to limit the fires and fireworks that accompany Fourth of July festivities.

There is some hope that rational people exist in Government here...

That would be a first! I think what's really happening is people in the area are frightened by loud fireworks ... and this is their way of stopping them, without looking like complete & total *censored* to the public. Just a theory, based on how people cry about noise these days.

I figured the piping plover would take kennedy's seat in the senate ....

If you don't like what's happening in your town, just toss a piping plover in there. :funny: They'll shut the whole place down.

No Plovers in this area because 'fireworks season' started 2 weeks ago...
The summer people swarm down and bring the fireworks with them...
But can not wait to light them off on the 4th...
Then another 2 weeks after before the supply gets used up...
The private displays ar pretty good...
Some people light them off on the beach thinking all the water is a good thing...
But forget about all the moored boats out there in the dark...
until the first rocket goes off...

SANDWICH — Fireworks and other Fourth of July revelry on Sandwich beaches are being blamed for the death of a piping plover chick and a least tern abandoning her nest for the night.

"It wasn't like it has been, but there were still fireworks and bonfires," Jedrey said.

Those caused disruptions for the nesting birds, which included a plover chick dying as it attempted to hatch in a nest on the mainland side of the Cape Cod Canal. The beach is privately owned but is in Sandwich, Jedrey said. It was the site of a large bonfire and fireworks, she said.

And elsewhere in MA, a poor man skinned his knuckles while extracting an improperly torqued oil filter from a Japanese motorcycle. House bill 9999 shall prevent the injury of persons removing oil filters by imposing stiff feeeees upon those who harm the environment by over-torqueing oil filters by contaminating said environment with blood, and therefore perpetuate the election of us democrats for generations to come. :woot: :funny:  :fear:

It's amazing how a piping plover makes the news, but not the 10 people or so who got robbed today in Worcester .... :alone:
