SANDWICH — The town has drawn a line in the sand and is refusing to close its beaches tomorrow night to protect nesting shorebirds.
The U.S. Department of the Interior's Fish and Wildlife Service had requested the beach be closed from dusk through the morning to limit the fires and fireworks that accompany Fourth of July festivities.

I think what's really happening is people in the area are frightened by loud fireworks ... and this is their way of stopping them, without looking like complete & total *censored* to the public. Just a theory, based on how people cry about noise these days.
They'll shut the whole place down.

SANDWICH — Fireworks and other Fourth of July revelry on Sandwich beaches are being blamed for the death of a piping plover chick and a least tern abandoning her nest for the night.
"It wasn't like it has been, but there were still fireworks and bonfires," Jedrey said.
Those caused disruptions for the nesting birds, which included a plover chick dying as it attempted to hatch in a nest on the mainland side of the Cape Cod Canal. The beach is privately owned but is in Sandwich, Jedrey said. It was the site of a large bonfire and fireworks, she said.
