Good Job on the restoration. The red paint makes it look like a little soldier to me. Interesting. You'll be very happy with it's performance. Great Job!

Thanks I'm glad I bought one of these stoves and can't wait to use it. That's funny you think it looks like a soldier. I think it looks like a fire hydrant.

I know this is an old thread - but thought I'd share this bit of info.

Re the name McCarthy carved into the bottom door of the Chubby - I had noticed that only recently and figured maybe it was the name of the guy that bought my second hand stove. I emailed Larry out of curiosity some time ago and here is his response:

Larry's reply (pasted here with his permission) -->

Hi John,

The name McCarthy on your ash door is the name of a friend who carved the acanthus leaf design in my wooden master patterns. Paul McCarthy was a wood carver in Scituate Harbor during the time I invented and designed the Coal Stove Chubby. I offered him the opportunity to promote his business by carving his name into the masters that then became aluminum foundry plates used to produce the Stove door you asked about.

If your stove has an outside shaker handle it was likely produced around 1979-80 or so. It may have been sold by Elliot Fuels in Danvers, MA. Hope this is a help to you.

Regards,
Larry Trainer, inventor designer

It's always neat to learn the history of things. Now, McCarthy us immortalized on here for others to discover.

I've forgotten all about this thread. Good to see my old stove immortalized here. I do miss that stove.

Traded it to Crazy4Coal for a ton of coal after I bought my DS. The Chubby, as awesome as it was just couldn't keep my house warm when the temps dropped below 30*.
