Cost to Buy & Bury 1000 Gallon Propane Tank

Can anyone tell me what it might cost (in NEPA) to buy (outright) a 1000 gal propane tank and have it buried.
I am thinking of using LPG Furnace it to back-up a heat pump. I'll also use the LPG for cooking and clothes dryer.

I live in NE Ohio and when I looked into buying my own tank I ran into this problem. The different gas suppliers said they would only fill "their" tank. Meaning the one I got from them as a customer.

Whatever the cost I'm thinking it would be too much! I myself would rather invest the money in coal!

and I will have coal stove for supplemental heat anyway.

Then as far as some gas suppliers filling only their tanks, that is the part of the "propane ripoff" that I am going to avoid.
When suppliers own the tank they charge "their price" for filling it!

I own my tank and regulators, everything. I am just a “will call” customer. My propane supplier suggested I do this because I was not using enough gas for them to have their bottle at my place. I have a 100 gallon bottle for cooking and clothes drying and fill it once a year. For my propane supplier the deal was buy the bottle and regulators, new or used, from them and have them hook it up. Their reasoning was so that they were sure of the quality of the equipment and installation; they do not want to be putting propane in an unsafe tank. If I needed and wanted a big underground tank I’m sure they would do the same except I would have to hire someone to dig the hole and burry the tank and maybe they would have to be there to make sure the tank was buried properly, I don’t know if there are any special regulations regarding underground propane tanks. Call around someone should be willing to sell you a tank and fill it. I think about 10 years ago the cost for a 100 gallon tank was $225 new and $175 used. I have no idea what a 1,000 gallon underground tank would cost and then to burry it.

I brought my Harmon as a supplemental heat source. That was before I found this forum and learned that I could keep my house warmer for less then half the price of gas. My gas furnace quickly became my supplemental heat source. I use the gas furnace approximately 4 weeks out of the year - two in the fall while the weather is transitioning and two in the spring for the same reason. I use the gas for cooking and the clothes dryer. The average gas bill per month is $15. The gas company took us off the budget billing plan because our monthly bill is too low. Prior to the coal stove I was spending $150 per month year round.

Have you looked at any of the fuel comparison charts from previous postings?

Personal opinion, before I laid out the cost for a 1000 gallon tank and go through the mess of having it buried, I'd do a little more research. If cooking with gas is high on your priority list (it is on mine) then go with the 100 gallon tank and an "on call" refill contract; let that be your backup heat source. I think you'll find, providing you have a reliable source of coal, that coal offers the most heat for the least money. Just my thoughts, Lisa

Start with an above ground tank 100 or 250 gallon and see how much you really use...
Cooking and drying are minimal users...
If you find that you use mor than the smaller tanks can handle the you can install the big tank...
Owing your tank lets you shop around...

Now, I am hoping that I can find out what it cost to buy a 1000 gal Propane tank and have it buried...
Particularly in Bushkill, area of the Poconos...

ps The area to which I am moving FAVORS buried tanks..The appearance of above ground tanks has to be deemed acceptable
by the governing body (inspector). The below ground tank, obviously, is installed to code...

I believe the 1000 gallon tanks our church just recently bought cost approximately $1700 each. They were installed above ground so I can't help with the burial cost. About 12 years ago we did the same thing, bought and buried a 1000 gallon tank. We use propane for the dryer, hot water and cooking as well as the backup propane furnace. Back then it cost $1100, and since we were also building an addition, the guy digging the footers & basement also dug the hole for the tank so I can't help with the cost of burial. Since his backhoe was already here, it only took him about 1 hour to dig it and set it in place and cover it.

The price difference in propane from having a leased tank to owning our tank routinely saves us about $1 per gallon so it has paid for itself a few times already. We get it filled about every two years, we are due again this summer, the last time was the summer of '08.

You could expect to pay about 300-400.00 Dollars to burry a tank thats, del back hoe, dig hole, remove hoe, and burry tank....

Propane Ripoff

I can understand wanting to have a gas kitchen stove, it is nicer to use for cooking then an electric range, but it is just not worth the propane hassle.

I still have the Empire heater if anybody wants it.

I can just imagine the environmental hoops you'd have to jump through to get a tank buried in MA. Everybody thinks of oil when you say "buried tank" up here, & they'd never let it happen.

I bought a tank about five years ago when I converted the fireplace to gas log insert. I think it was about 500 gallons and cost around $850 plus $450 to dig the tank hole, trench about 40' for the line, run the line and hook it to the regulator. Checked wtih four gas companies and they all required a copy of the bill of sale showing I bought a new tank before they would sell me any gas. I set up a will call with each and shop them for price. They charge more if you are just cooking with gas. I told them it is used for heating. Otherwise, the will call price is the same as it would be if they owned the tank as long as you order a minimum of 150 gallons. I think the delievery charge is about $50 if you order less. Propane is expensive in my area because there is no nearby pipeline. Over the past five years I have probably averaged about $2.10/gallon, ordering in August.
