Class A chimney In Code????

Class A chimney In Code????

PostBy: fordman4444 On: Mon Jul 19, 2010 9:21 am

I built an addition onto the back of my house and I put a wood stove in. The Chimney comes out of the roof of the addition and is over 24 inches from the brick that makes up the side of my house. Also the Chimney is above the peak of the addition roof by 2 feet. However, above the brick, that makes up the side of my house, there is some vinyl siding, so the top of the Chimney is about 3 feet below this vinyl siding. So the top of the rain cap on my Chimney is level with the brick that makes up my house, but 3 feet above this brick is vinyl siding, so ultimately, the Chimney is below this siding, am I in Maryland Code???

Can't say about any area's code. Take this for what it's worth, the paperwork that came with my chimney and stove stated that the top of the chimney had to be two feet higher than any part of the roof (structure?) within a ten foot radius.

I can't say about Maryland but it would seem to me if the chimney was put up under a county or city building permit and then inspected by the building inspector, your Class A chimney would be in code. The inspector would have checked the "distance to combustibles" at that time. I know my inspector did. My first stop would be the county "code compliance" office to see if the permit was pulled and the inspection completed. If so, you concerns are over, if not you can check out the code and see what you'd need to do to come into compliance. Most governments have their codes on line now.

Good luck, Lisa

Rule of thumb is 2 feet above anything within a 10 foot radius.

Yup, and so is the rule of "code."
