I've set up a test forum here if you want to test out the new features of PHPBB3 . It Can be found here:

<removed old link>

You should be able to log in with the current username and password. All the posts and everything else is there.

NOTE: This is only a test forum and uses a separate database than this forum. ANY posts or changes you make in the test forum will eventually be deleted.

The new user control panel is quite extensive, you may want to head there first once you login and check it out but again any changes you make are not permanent.

Some of the features you will find are: Saving posts as drafts, friends & foes, Change the fonts,.... etc. There's a lot of features, you can even adjust what forums and how many topics are displayed if you want.
----------------------------------

One thing I'm not so sure I like is that the posters name is now to the right, this I can change. What do you think?

The style BTW is the new default PHPBB style, I'll of course be modifying it for my own theme similar to this forum.

The format is quite similar to another forum I participate in. One feature of the other forum, that I find useful and that is not shown in the test forum, is a listing of the subject of the last post. (Perhaps the feature is not shown because you have posted only one topic from the forum index.)

I don't have a strong preference as to whether the poster is listed on the left or right--I think it is just a matter of getting used to the style used in a particular forum.

Here is the address of the other forum so you can see what I am talking about with respect to the subject of the latest post.

I have that on this forum too, that's not a standard phpBB2 feature and as far as I can see it's not a standard phpBB3 feature either. However phpBB is open source and the current stable version has literally thousands of modifications for it, once available I'll be adding ones I want. That would be one of them.

They try and keep the code "lean and mean" so it doesn't hog up a lot of resources. Instead they leave it to the end user to do what they want with it so they can fit it to their needs without bloating it. Frankly I'm suprised there are as many features as it has. For example it has a birthday section that will tell you when someones birthday is if they have added that info to their profile.... useless to me and I'm sure most members aren't really interested when my birthday is. A little too personal for my tastes.

Any comments? Starting to look pretty good?

Anybody try it out? What do you think?

-------------------------------------------

Some features I will be adding:
  • RSS feeds
  • A personal blog for those of you that are interested.
  • A knowledge base and/or glossary
  • ...And... The coal_kid radio show....
I have a few other tricks up my sleeve too but I'm keeping them to myself at the moment.

The software itself is still not a final release, current version is Release Canidate 2, there will be a 3. Expect it sometime late summer early fall.

Looks good. I like the ability to change the font size. Will the chosen font size stick? On the "knowledge base and/or glossary" who will author it, add to it, make corrections, etc.?

Well I just closed my browser out and after opening it back up they did so yes they should, must be cookie based. There's lots of keyboard shortcuts too. alt-l-enter takes you to login screen for example. I'll get a list when I can.

Whoever, I certainly don't have the time to maintain it entirely myself. I'll probably set some minimal limitations for access to edit to prevent someone from signing up just for the purpose of vandalizing it but besides that everyone will have access if they want it. Maybe even install a wiki, not sure yet. I haven't really looked at the options.
